Need Rifle Advice
I need a no-scope rifle for hunting the thick woods of northeastern US. Walking all day will require a lightweight rifle made out of materials that can get covered with the elements. With the thick brush and thickets that cover the land up there, I am thinking that a 7mm would react poorly to the twigs etc @ 100+ yards.
I also will need to fire quickly with open sights.
Ideas:
Marlin 30/30 lever
Remi pump stainless 336
Anyone have suggestions??

I'm thinking that your suggestion is a great one. Also think about an auto loading "deer" shotgun or maybe a Remington 7400 in 308. I also wouldn't shoot through twigs at 100+ yards with any gun/ bullet combo.

If you can live with a bolt gun you might look at Remington's stainless/synthetic Model 7 in .308. Just mount a peep rear sight, unscrew the aperture and use the hole as your rear sight. Fast and accurate.
Have you considered the .44 Magnum for deer? I think Marlin may be making a lever gun in stainless.
I use a Ruger .44 Carbine for the same type hunting and it is perfect. It's not stainless but I put up with the extra maintenance because it works so well. I've killed deer with both carbine and revolver and am impressed by how well the .44 cartridge works at short range.

IF I HAD THE CASH FOR AN OPEN SITED AUTO LOADER BE A BROWNING BAR 300 WSM, AVOIDING THE REMINGTON FOR THE REASON OF I SEEN TO MANY PROBLEMS.
RUGER LIGHTWEIGHT OR REMINGTON MODEL 7 BUT I WOULD BE TRYING A 7-08. MY BROTHERS RUGER SHOOTS GREAT IN .308 BUT YUO KNOW ITS THERE. ALSO REMINGTON HAS COME BACK WITH .35 MAG RETRO. I SHOOT .300 WIN.MAG. IN A T/C ENCORE MORE THEN ENOUGH GUN AND WEIGHES IN AT 8# SCOPED. THE OPTIONS ARE ENDLESS BUT WHAT EVER YOU FEEL IS THE BEST...THOUGH I WANT THE NEW 30-30 BY WINCHESTER IN 161/2" BARREL FOR THE WIFE.

I'd love to see the .35 Remington make a big comeback. My dad still uses his - we call it Ol' Knock 'Em Stiff because when you hit a deer with it, he's going down in his tracks. Perfect for up close and I've seen him take deer at 150 yards or so with his peep sight.
