I think there is some confusion here. James is talking about the resin type glue that is similar to hot glue. The other more modern glues will not release the inserts predicably with heat without damage to the graphite shafts.

I use a heat gun, the kind for stripping paint, set on Lo. Apply heat to nock and keep arrow turning slowly as you do . Look for a wisp of fumes as the glue loosens, then pull nock with a pliers. Works on carbons for me.

Well, I did the freezing then boiling. It worked very well on the plastic inserts on alum arrows. It didn't work nearly as well on the aluminum inserts. So, I would deduce that it was the expansion and contraction of dissimilar materials which made it work. Just thought I should post results.
I think a soldering iron onalum inserts would make them much hotter and would work better,
