RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
So I decide to make a two hour trip to the north coast a visit my brother. He says bring your hunting gear and we will check out some puplic land near the house. Not expecting much on a rainy, windy day, we scout for about ten minutes between two corn fields andstumble on afresh scrape from this morning. I was excited to say the least. My brother says sit down wind 20 to 30 yards. So we came back later this evening. I didn't get to shoot, but let me tell you, it's been a long time since I felt like I was chewing on my heart it was pounding so hard. Just seeing the deer come toward me was exciting. My brother ends up pegging a nice doe 80 yards from where was sitting. She dropped on the spot when he hit her right between the ears while she faced him and was eating. What a shot!!!What a great day to to get out!!!!

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
He shot her in the face?? On purpose?? Either a really good shot or a really bad shot or a really lucky shot. Dead is dead I guess. Congrats.
|
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Is that using a CB at 80 yds. to kill the doe or was he shooting a rifle?
|
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Please say it was not with a CB, at 80 yards, and intentionally.
|
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
His shot wasn't 80yrds...lol. Sorry about that. He was sitting 80 yards awayfrom me and killed his dow with a 20 yard shot, yes with a crossbow. It had to be one of the deer I saw come out of the cornfield into the woods heading his direction.I asked him why the head shot and he said "following a blood trail in the dark while it was raining on 2000 acres we didn't know would be a tough tracking job."
|
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Glad to hear it was not eighty yards, head shot thought is still a subject that does not get good reviews. At least we now have two data points on the head shot subject. Its a risky shot that has a good chance of being 100% fatal or a badly wounded deer running off with part of it face missing.
|
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
I'm gladyour brotherkilled the doe...congrats on that part. Personally, I wouldn't shoot a deer in the head with any type of bow and prollly not even a gun unless it was real close. It's too easy for the deer to move or turn it's head. Theybob there head all over the place anyways. But like I said, I'm glad the shot killed it and didn't just wound it.Just because you shoulder a CB, doesn't make it a rifle....JMO

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Well I'm heading out to the new spot with the pond in the woods to check it out. Spose to meet the lady at noon. I have very good feelings about maybe getting a wall hanger out of this woods. Prolly wait till afterthe 9th to take a buck. Since we can only kill a buck during firearms season here.... Hopefully I can take another nice doe with the CB for steaks and sausage. Gonna set up the blind when I get there.

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
I shot a spike years ago thru the bottom jaw with a 12g slug. Took forever to find the poor thing. Long, slow and painful and the pics are not ones I put in my scrap book.
PS.. lousy shot not intentional.. |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Took a nice 8 pointer last evening. Broadside 30 yard shot. Arrow knocked him off his feet and he died right on the spot. This is my first deer with a crossbow - very exciting.
Family is glad to have more venison. |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
I took my oldest son (9) out yesterday afternoon for the Youth hunt. We had someone walk on the outside of our plot around 6 which ruined the best part of the day. We still had a good time though. The weatherw as great finally. A bunch of us met up after the hunt and cooked hot dogs and told Ghost stories. I eased off into the woods as one of the guys was telling a story about a red ghost light and I had a small led red light in my pocket. We scared the crap out of the kids/ They wont soon forget that one. There were 3 deer taken a two missed and one was a 10 point

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Haven't seen a lot of pictures... But I took my first Cross-bow buck ever (took a doe early in the season)
Here's the picture... Not much of a story, he was following a huge doe, veered off path to munch on some acorns... and wap! ![]() |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
I'd say you got a good one there, congrats!
|
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
OK at 8:04 am 4 deer came by my oak tree stand. Big nanny with 2 70 lb. little ones in tow and another nannydragging up the rear. Had broadside shot on all 4. They were 40 yds. again, too far fer Miss Vixen. So i found a real good ground spot up in the thicket and they can't see me until they step completely out at 16 yds. in the wide open!:DI have 4 more days of this second Bow season left.

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Went out this morning and I did not see anything, but dad did see a couple. I heard them moving by me, but to dark to see, and then dad seen them right at sun up, to far away for him. SO I went out and picked up a ladder stand for dad to get out of blind a get a little closer. Seen the same deer tonight, but they where a little to far away, we did make alot of noise putting up ladder, going out tomorrow morning again and going to give dad a crack at new stand again.

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Went out to the big woods today with the rifle, just to size things up for the firearm segment of the season. I don't scout the area in pre-season except if you count turkey season. The place where I hunt is a natural large funnel and the deer have no choice but to come thru there, but it's thick, so you have to pick your spot wisely. Not much sign of heavy traffic, so the rut seems to be a ways off yet. Dry conditions have made the main creekbed dry, and that's not a good thing. I bumped out of there just before noon and checked out a natural spring I found last year. I was surprised to find it still flowing and holding h2o. Found a nice place to hang the stand, so I'll be working that area more until we get some meaningful rainfall.

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Well i tell ya no deer again. That high school reject is camping 200 yds. from my oak ladder stand and he is running off the deer from the trails by my stand. Today is last day of second bow season. Tomorrow is ML season opener, i will tote my smokepole. I need the freezer meat. Lost my transport job last nite! Its ok he was an a$$ to work fer and beat me out of wages so much i am glad of it!

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Went out that last couple nights and morning and ive been seeing this huge buck but he always waiting till night to really show himself.
Anyway last night had a few does and a small buck pass my stand |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
I haven't seen anything but have heard a few off in the distance. I also haven't posted to this thread for awhile. There starting to really pick the corn and beans up here so maybe that'll get 'em moving more. Also seeing some below freezing temps at night! We've had pretty heavy frost in places the last few nights now. I went out to my old spot and found a bunch of fresh tracks! A big buck for sure!! Man he sank about 2-3" into the dirt. (soft) there where also some doe prints following him around. I may give it a shot out there tonite. I haven't been going in the mornings. My back has really been a hurtin' and movin' that early is difficult. Good Luck everyone!

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Went out this morning, got out kinda late. But soon after I showed up the RR came in and started making alot of noise. I had my stand set up within fifty yards of track and there where two guys inspecting track and then decide to start to remove a twenty foot section track. Sat and watched them for a little and then left. Be back out tonight.

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Well it's black powder season this morning in NC so I was there with my ole smokepole with baited breath. I saw nothing early so I picked up my deer & deer hunting magizine and started reading some good hunting stories. I keep all the new issues unread untill gun season so I have something new to read. LOL. Anyway, at 8:15 AM, after looking up from a paragraph I just read, out of my right side window, I saw what to me is better than an 8 point buck walking towards the front cut field. I got my pole out the window and took off the safety, whistled twice and it stopped broadside. He then had a very bad day cause I lit him up! I didn't want it torn up too badly so I aimed for the lungs and that's where it got him. I have already taken to to my taxidermist for a full body mount. You guessed it, it's a mature male coyote. It's the very first one I've ever seen in this area. Didn't even know there was any around here. But I'm sure glad he WAS! I haven't gotten a deer yet this season but I've got Monday and Tuesday of this week and Monday ond Tuesday of next week to connect hopely. There is so many rubs and scrapes this year I can't count them. Way more activity this year than past years here. It's just a matter of time when old daddy long legs shows up looking for miss right. Good luck to all of you.

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Went out this AM even with the wind howling and saw a crippled ( I mean physically disabled ) fork horn I have seen more than once. Walks like he either has a broken back hip or one leg is shorter than the other and he looks a little thin.
Almost dusted him at 20 yards but did not want to use up my last buck tag. Still wondering if I should have shot him. What do you guys think???? Buddy.. you were beating them up last year so things shouldbe getting better for you. Still a couple/few weeks until the rut for you??? |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Congrats BuddyBo, nice yote looking forward to gittin me one.

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
BuddyBo,
Congrats on your coyote kill. TAKE EVERY ONE OUT YOU CAN !!!!! They will ruin a great hunting area. We have them bad down here in Louisiana, and we take all we can, don't know what we would do if we didn't. I got some pictures a few years ago with spotting fawns in their mouths, running off in front of the camera. They will wipe out the rabbit population, and kill all young deer they run across. They will also pack-up and kill bigger deer. So you can bet if there is one, there is many, many more where that one come from..... Enjoy your hunts, shoot straight, stay safe !!!!!! |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Went out before sunrise got in my ground blind and sat and listend,it was 32 deg and still,I heard some movement to the west of me on the ridge,it looked like 2 deer(was)walking abou 40 yards away, they stayed on the ridge and off into the awkeing morrning. Then as the woods became lighter(sunrise)all you could hear were the Rifles going off all around(open gun season till the 11th),about 9:00 I walked the woods and found 1 more new scrape and 3 fresh piles of deer poop so I think he is going thru in the evening so thats what I will do tomorrow...a evening hunt, but with all the guns going off my little piece of hunting heaven is going to start getting more deer in it.Thank you gun hunters........
P.S. shouldr is starting to feel good, best its been in over a year........ |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Did you make two? Looks like one good one at least showed up.
Went out tonight. Sat in new stand since dad was out of town. As I was walking by the tall reed grass I could hear two bucks going at it! My heart was pumping big time. I have to walk right by this stuff and they had to be in there within thirty yards of me. I could hear them grunting and the horns clanking together. Was not sure what to do so I just hurried up and went to stand and waited, only seen a doe come out. But as I walked by I could hear stuff moving in the reeds. The doe, which looked kinda small came out right at sunset, I think she was within thirty yards of stand when I got down well into the dark, but not sure if I was just seeing things or not. When I left I never heard her snort or run off. Will go out next on Wednesday. |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II
Ya had to add but pufffff gone.........The rut is just starting from what I see in the woods..I heard 2 bucks going at it on friday but the cover was too thick to see em......Yep sure gets the heart going, thats fer sur...
