Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II

Wanted to start this post again so we could all share our stories about "Todays" activity. We make alot of good post and get a few, sometimes alot of replies but its easy for them to fall down the page and be forgot about. It was nice to have a thread where we could all check in and give an update on how the hunting is going. For example we might go out and see nothing or see a small doe off in the distance. Some will not want to make a post about just that cause what would you reply to it and say. So with this post were we could get in what the action was for that day and share. Some will not want to post on anon productive hunt, but if you go out and sit in the woods, tell us about it! Could be no action at all, but keepeach other up on how much we are getting out and whats going on. We had this last year and had alot of info from all of our hunts, I really enjoy from time to time doing a search for it and reading. Now if you have an awesome day in the stand or say have something extra special to share like falling out of the stand or something that you are totally pumped about like getting a deerthen make a separate post for it. This is not meant to have everything in it, but a online journal of our hunts. If you do make a separate post, try to post a reply in here with the link so as all of our great hunting stories can be accessed easily for all to see. So with the success we had last year on this lets do it again!

Edit: Forgot to tell ya this is the link to last years thread, lots of good hunts, a good read on a slow night!

Wednesday was good, had a shot at 5 yds. on a 90 lb. Doe. I let her go, looking fer a bigger fatter one. No mistake no spots, think she was last years fawn. Makes her a yearling. If i don't get any other in next week or so i will pop her if she gives me another chance. Both knees of my 20 year + camo pants ripped out. Just can't good quailty pants anymore.[&o]

See my post above about the non-shooters remorse. Have passed on 5 does too. One big girl with a grown fawn but it' just too early. Two with very small fawns. And a couple of yearlings. Must be getting soft. I can shoot three this yr (one buck) but seems I don't feel the need to fill the freezer just yet. Maybe tomorrow.....

Last year I had already seen 20 bucks and lots of does. This year, and I've hunted every Friday and Saturday since season opened Sept 8th,I have only seen two bucks and three does. I has to be the drought conditions here in NC and the heat as well. They are eating the corn but at night time. Oh well, the weather will change soon I hope so hunting will get better. Later,

Buddy, the deer where I hunt will not eat corn at all since the acorns started dropping and there is a big crop of them, looks like I need to hunt the white oaks.

Well i made 3 trips down to oaks this morning. Took my ladder stand and all its extras. Then i got Miss Vixen and quiver and eased down there and sat in my camo chair. Birds n squirrels til little after 8 am. Big Doe with 2 little ones came my way and a nice 5 pt. and a nice 8 pt. followed her. She didn't like the fat man sitting in chair by her acorns![:o]I had shots at 35 yds. on Doe andone little one and both bucks. Just felt it was to far fer Miss Vixen who is sighted in at 20 yds. with 560 grs. arrows. They left and i got ladder stand put up. I hope i see any of in them in the morning closer.

Went to my farm this morning, got there a little late, but i still made it in time to see a buck and a doe. Passed both of them up. too small for me. I went to a different farm with a ground blind and i scouted around and shot a few squirrels, and then put up my blind. I brushed it in well and left for a few hours. I came back to the farm, but the lady's hotttt 19 year old daughter was home, yada yada yada:Ddidnt get out till 5:30 that afternoon. I sat down for 10 minutes and i looked out my left window and a little doe was feeding at about 10 yards. sweet! that dang doe came up to my blind window, and stuck her nose in! she was lookin at me straight in the eyes and didnt flinch at all. started eating the leavesfrom my brush job on the blind! very intense to say the least! one of the coolest experiances so far hunting. I'm going to bed, this 6am stuff is going to kill me lol

Helped my buddy track a 12 pointer he shot at 20 yards with his exocet, stock arrows and wasp bh's. We tracked it for 1/4 of a mile.....very little blood trail of bright red blood.....spot here , spot there , not much to go on then finally down to nothing. We continued to zig zag the area for another 75 yards in hopes pf finding another blood drop.....nothing. I feel he was not hit as good as my pal thought .....he probably pulled the shot and just maybe nicked the belly area.......arrow not found as I type this.

Well I can't call it a hunt but I did do some watching. Directly behind my house is a corn field with a strip of woods that seperates my yard and the field. I have several large oak trees in that strip and I'm putting up a ladder stand against one that over looks a sweet bedding area. Any how tonight I walked back there and climbed up a ladder into the oak tree that I'm putting the stand against. I was there for maybee 20 minutes when 5 does walked in and started munching on some corn I placed in a couple of piles. No bucks yet but there sure to visit the lady's shortly. Unfortunatly our dog came flying back there to check out what I was doing and the does hit the road. I could hear her in the house carrying on. She must of saw me head back there and one of my boys let her out.

Lesson 1; Either kill the family pet early on or be a little more stealthy when heading back to my spot. Think I'll try option two.

Got off work this morning and sleptuntil a afternoon hunt. Me and dad went to the swamp spot and only seen tree rats. Had a good afternoon thunderstorm so all the tracks where washed out and there was a nice set of fresh tracks in the mud not 15 yards from stand. Was in stand by four, stopped raining around two. Must have just missed it! Have to go in to work in the morning for a few hours and then me and dad will do another evening hunt. Good luck all!

1st trip out today. Under the lessons learned/remembered column:

1. Anti-fog for eyeglasses works better if not left on table.
2. Range funder won't work w/ humidity on front lenses.
3. Changing batteries won't help.
4. That neat little dead limb you hang pack on rots in a year.
5 Thank the Lord for that little breeze that clears glasses and cools ya off.
6.Too bad He couldn't have had it blow from opposite direction.
7.Hanging quiver on a branch works better w/ no breeze.
8. Can't get judo point arrow for squirrel w/ quiver on ground.
9. Finally know how Barney Fife [one bullet] felt all those years.
10. That 5 am failed attempt on the throne will come back to haunt you.
11. That idea of going through all the pouches on pack to see where stuffs at was a good one, shoulda done it.
12. Solunar table appears accurate, no deer.

I left the house at 5:55 am and got up into ladder stand at 6:08 am. Sat there and watched as it got light, had my friends come by birds & squirrels and a rabbit. I guess about 8:30 am 3 deer came to the oaks,:D 2 Doe's and a 4 pt. I shot the 4 pt. [8D]the doe's left split city quick. [&o]The 4 pt. ran thru all that brush about 75 yds. before dropping on the ground. I blood trailed his sorry butt thru all that thicket and briars and found him out on the atv trail![:o]Miss Vixen has scored another date with a Buck!:)

Congrats on you hunt Mike!! I went out yesterday for a evening hunt and seen nothing. We had more fresh rain the night before and I had more fresh tracks in front of stand! Had I not been on nights and was on days I may have had a better chance at getting up at 5:30 then I did since I was on nights! Last two nights of nights tonight and tomorrow, then two weeks of days, plan on hitting the morning hunts then.

I was in my stand about 6:05 am, hot is the word to discribe it![&o]I fought skeeters by the hundreds and left at 9 am, its 91 degrees![:o]No deer no rabbits, saw squirrels and birds, couple of loud mouthed jays and crows. Buzzards were finishing off the 4 pts. gut pile.:DPlus i saw an Indianhead peckerwood getting its share of bugs out of an old elm tree close to me. They are so neat to watch, don't worry about the loud pecking. Deer feel very safe when they hear peckerwoods. They only seem to bother people, but they don't bother me none. I enjoy watching them!:)

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II

So this morning was opening day in Virginia for bow season.. I had all my stuff ready to go. At 4:30am I am up ready to get back into the woods. I take a step outside and nature forgot its Fall. Feels about 70 deg and humid as crap. [:@]I get a shower and all that get dressed taking my stuff to my truck and my stomach starts bubbleing [&:]Quickly make my way to the bathroom to prevent a nuclear meltdown in my pants. Mmm got to love the smell of my nostils burning from what ever potperri (sp) crap the wife has in there, deer should like it also.

Get to my spot park my truck a little before 6am and throw on my scentlock leafy suit and start my trip into the dark. Stomach still rumbling some. I pace myself to prevent sweating but doesn't work well. I stop take a break still have an hour before sunrise, finally get to my stand and get settled ready to rock. Still mostly dark but then they come. Mosquito's and lots of them. They can't get past my leaft suit but my hands (wearing light netting bow hunting gloves) and my opening in my face mask are fair game.

Around 6:50am or so 2 does walk out of the dark my way. I reach down and take off my safety and click my 3dot scope onto No. 1 light setting. They go behind a couple trees, to dark to shoot anyways just see their outlines. 5 minutes later they appear again this time its more light and I am ready. Still behind a couple small twigs that would be enough to throw off my shot. So I wait while I am basically being eating alive. They are around 20yards from me and I am afraid to move. I wait for them to go just a few more steps into an open shooting lane and drop the biggest. Never happens they walk over to where the persimmon trees are at the 35 yard mark and have breakfast.

I sit for another 30 minutes and Mosquito's are in a swarm on my hands 10 - 15 on each hand and I keep moving to get them away. All I hear is buzzingand since they can't get in that way they come and get all around my eyes.I throw in the towel and start walking back to my truck. My hands have welps on them the size of dimes and at least 75 spots ontop, on the bottom and sides of my hands and some on my fingers.. I left all mad and depressed..

Before going home I went to town and found some a Thermocell's and picked one up. Going back in a couple hours and taking back the woods and bringing home a deer.

Not I just hope I don't have West Nile or something ;)

Too Hot !!!.SW Pa....one week into season..average temperature 84 degrees. Today it will be 88. Nothing moving...I have been out three times and have seen only 9 deer. In my area , bucks must have at least four point on one side and with the heat , they stay put until way after dark...no hurry..I like being in the woods...hunt with vertical bow , xbow , rifle and flintlock..my deer season end mid january...good luck guys.."64"

Did not go hunting today, spent the afternoon cutting up the Deer from yesterday. Hot! Way to hot! Was cutting as fast as I could to fight off the bugs, would take a quarter out and then me and flies would race to get it done! Will hunt on my next day off which will be Thursday. Good luck to all.

Way to go Hotburn! Yes it has been hot... was 87 here yesterday. I went out to my blind for awhile to check it out, but was too hot to sit in it. I might move it to a little different spot today. I found a good crossing along the creek I got my doe. I wonder if the deer know when one has been killed nearby? From blood or gut pile etc?? I'm glad mine ran into the corn aways.

yeah in my woods they get spooked and leave for a few days when one gets killed. I'm going out today to clear a few more shooting lanes and put down this bio logic mineral lick stuff. Hopefully get out tuesday.
