I use lard. Use Crisco if you don't have lard. Heat oven to 325- 350. Heat skillet on top of stove about 5 mins. Use a paper towel to absorb some of the lard or Crisco on, then rub skillet completely to light coat. Not to much at a time or you will have an undesireable film on it. Place in oven for 30 mins. or so. as time goes on this step will become unnecessary. Wash only with soap and water, and wash as soon as use is completed. Don't use dishwasher and never let it soak for an extended period. When new it will be a grey color, but as time goes by it will turn black. The bottom should always be as smooth as can be. Good Luck. Capt Brad.

we always just rub them real good with hog lard and put them in the oven and increase the heat till it get real hot then let cool in the oven.
then the first few times,we cook bacon in it,that shoul do it.
some people in the days of old would build a fire in the yard and put the skillet in it and leave till the fire went out and it cools. both ways work pertty good.

One thing to remember with cast iron skillet, if it does start to stick on you due to someone like my wife who sticks it in the dishwasher, you will need to reseason it. We used to take any skillet that needed to be reseasoned and put it into a good oak fire and let it burn until the fire is out, then reseason it, we used bacon drippings instead of lard or the like.

Once the skillet is seasoned. DO NOT USE SOAP!!! Wipe clean and pour boiling water over it to kill the bacteria. Also when you cook with the skillet it kills the rest of the bacteria. Never use soap it takes the season right out of it, and your food will stick every time.

Cover it in oil and heat the heck out of it or just cook only bacon and sausage in it for a few weeks. If you oil and heat it, it will smoke a lot. The trick is only cook very greasy meat in it and never use soap to clean it. Hot water only. After while it is better than any no stick skillet you buy.

ive always cooked a big ol slab of bacon and then cook more bacon. but i never wash them. when done using, wipe with a disposible towel and get as clean as you can (if you cooked enough bacon it will be clean). then put it away . when you go to use it again preheat, wipe and use. no water no soap. just wipe. all my camp gear is cast. try a dutch oven.
