I use lard. Use Crisco if you don't have lard. Heat oven to 325- 350. Heat skillet on top of stove about 5 mins. Use a paper towel to absorb some of the lard or Crisco on, then rub skillet completely to light coat. Not to much at a time or you will have an undesireable film on it. Place in oven for 30 mins. or so. as time goes on this step will become unnecessary. Wash only with soap and water, and wash as soon as use is completed. Don't use dishwasher and never let it soak for an extended period. When new it will be a grey color, but as time goes by it will turn black. The bottom should always be as smooth as can be.
