Default Weekend Warriors

Well I was just curious on how many hunters out there are weekend warriors. To me it seems all I do is work, work, work, work, and the only time I get to hunt is after work and saturday. so really all I get is 1 morning. I hunt every afternoon I get when I can get off early. But when the time changes it gets dark earlier and there goes that, when that happens all I can do is hunt on saturday. But the family comes first and then I get my time. And I try to get the most out of every minute. And I enjoy every second. I have 4 days left vac. this year and I plan on taking right smack dab in the middle of the rut, If nothing comes up. Good luck to all this year.

I wouldn't consider you a weekend warrior not would I consider myself one.

When hunting season rolls around and for me that starts Sept. 1 with the begining of dove season, continues into October bow season, small game, turkey, rifle season (usually carry bow), a pause in seasons and then late archery/muzzleloader and small game all over again and then a couple months til spring gobbler. Now, I find myself busyer and busyer each year but get out as much as possible.

There are those who hunt, and then there are hunters. I am a hunter.

I commend you for making your family come first. I know several guys who seem to &quot;forget&quot; about their familes from Oct. til Dec.

I try to stay in the middle of the road somewhere. Never giving hunting more time than my wife and daughter.

I, like yourself, am only able to do the majority of my hunting on Saturdays. I work in the financial markets and must be at work 8am-4pm Mon-Fri. During the hunting season (Mid-Sept to Mid-Feb) my wife and I have an &quot;agreement&quot; that I hunt most Saturdays and get no &quot;play time&quot; on Sundays. On Sundays I must conceed to going shopping with her, being pulled trhough malls, and completing tasks on her &quot;honey-do&quot; list. (you know: do this, do that, fix this, fix that) It is well worth the compromise in my opinion.

I feel your pain smokyghost. I too only get to hunt weekends. I work first, then I spend time with family, then is she lets me I go hunting. If I could only hunt more.

My solution to stay in good with the wife is to hunt two weekends in a row, then skip a weekend. This works great for me. I also try to take 6-8 vacation days a year during the rut.

Man, I can relate to this. In years past (pre wife and kids) I hunted weekdays and all weekend. Now with a job, family and other responsibilities, time is a precious commodity. However, since I have worked at the same place for nearly 15 years, I am reaping the benefits of lots of vacation time each year. I'm able to take the week of spring break off with the kids, a week in the summer for vacation, a week at thanksgiving, a week at Christmas, and that still leaves me 2 more weeks to hunt and fish! Not to mention I can &quot;bank&quot; nearly an extra week through the year of time that I work over. Makes life nice to hit the lake or the woods while everyone else is working. Actually, I've probably had my most enjoyable times during the week. My friend is self employeed so by both of us hunting and fishing during the week, we really minimize the time away from our families. Life is good...

I COMMEND YOU ON YOUR FAMILY COMMITMENT. THERE IS NOTHING MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR FAMILY.

I TOO, WORK HUGE AMOUNTS OF HOURS AND HAVE LITTLE TIME TO HUNT BUT I SPEND THAT LITTLE TIME IN THE WOODS SOMETIMES IT IS WITH PARTS OF THE FAMILY.

I TRY TO TAKE CARE OF THE HONEY DOO'S BEFORE OPENING DAY AND ALL OF THE REST OF THE COMMITMENTS. THEN I AM FREE FOR MY HUNTING TIME

smoky you are so right in putting family first, my hat is off to you. I have taken a different tact in that I take my twins hunting with me. I do not know how old you are, but when I was much younger I was like you and had very little time to hunt. I watch young people jump from one job to another to make more money, but in the long run I am far happier than them. Although they may make a bit more than me, when I spend opening week of bow, blackpowder and gun in the woods while they are working away with no vacation time I grin sitting in my stand. I have 20 years with the same company and take 3 weeks off every year for hunting and still have vacation for the whole family to boot!

I guess what I am doing is trying to give a word of advice to the younger folks here, once you find a company you are happy with, stick with them, time spent on vacation with your family or hunting is woth far more than money.

This past year I was laid off and my new company only offers 2 weeks of vacation Soooooooooooooo I used it for a family vacation to Africa this year.
Next year I might be able to do a regional trip but I don't think a trip to africa is going to be in the cards <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>
I only hunt weekends when my daughter is not horse showing or playing soccer. The past 5 years have been slim for me in terms of time in the field but I know in 4 or 5, whne she is ready for collage then there will be time for me.
Take the time to spend with the family and time for yourself around that. I know it's tough sometimes but it means so much to your child/ren!
