I have stands ranging from 8' to over 30' depending on the surounding treain and branches. For flat ground I like 15-20 ' depending on the need to see under or over branches.

I have one stand in a cedar tree about 10 feet off the ground. By the time deer can see me, there's a little red pin on their side. Like everyone else said...it depends on the terrain/situation. I generally like to be 15-20 feet up, but there's no need here.

Same comments here. The situation dictates the height though I rarely drop below 12-15 feet. On average I am between 15-20 feet with one or two spots in the 25 foot range.

I've bowhunted from trees before they came out with portable treestands and to this day never set a stand over 12'. I put a pull line on each of the stands that's exactly 12' and when they come tight I'm where I want to be. I only set in a stand that the wind is absolutely right for and have no problems with deer winding me or seeing me. Just thought I'd add my 2 cents.

20-25ft

well, supposedly, the articles i have read say that deer have a "blind spot" at around 18' on flat ground, I have a 23' pull rope on my climber so that the botton of my stand is at about 19'. I cant remember the last time a deer saw me, I even had one stand that is kinda in the wide open, and dont have a problem with being seen. If you stick in the 18-23' range you should not have a problem. just my .02 worth

My climbing sticks reach 16' and I have the bottom of my stand about 6" below the top so It is easy to climb in. So I guess 15'6" for me.

Also take in to consideration if you put your stand on a steep hill, if a deer walks from behind, he will be able to see you much easier due to the height of the deer in relation to your stand. I found this out because I got busted last year as i wasnt high enough off the ground.

First off, climbers just don't cut it in some parts of the country...Here, there's not one tree around that would let you just climb straight up it So, permanants can be great routes when you get them high enough...like everyone else 12-22 feet...depending on your terrain. If your facing into a hill, you could be as high in the tree as you want but still be eye to eye to an approaching deer....And one last thing, some have said it's a little too late to be building stands...not really. Some people put up a stand in the morning and get a deer that evening. And some even hunt their bird or squirrel dogs in the same area as their stands and still get their deer. Good luck.
