SPIRIT OF THE WILD A WASTE OF A SHOW?
#11
Playing Devil's Advocate Here..but I'm just curious to how people feel...
Many of you say hunting the high fences and/or exotic game ranches out of normal seasons is necessary because Ted (or any other hunting personality) needs to "fill up" a year's worth of shows...
if so...
Is that truly "the Spirit of the Wild", or could we actually call that "The Spirit of the Almighty Dollar"?
Is it it really necessary every friggin week for the hunters to HAVE to kill something? If so (for whatever reason), is that really what hunting is about?
Just seems all wrong to me..hunting videos used to be somewhat educational, and a fairly normal portrayal of hunting for the average joe..now they are huge productions with multilple camera crews, massive editing, incessant product whoring, and a "get a kill on tape at all costs" mentality. "Billy-Bob used his Mathews bow, Mossy Oak camo, CX arrows, w/ NAP broadheads in his API stand, which he drove to in his Polaris ATV, all the while covering his scent trail with ScentLok clothing and a splash of Tinks 69..Tinks 69!"
E.G. Look at the original Drury Brothers Videos..MB, Right Place Right Time, etc..these guys always had the sponsor plugs, but it wasn't rampant...they hunted big farms in prime territory, but they weren't on any famous ranches, they killed mostly average or small bucks, and some does...most of the footage was of deer they never got a chance to get, but showed how hunting really is for most folks...deer busting you, never hitting your lane or giving you the right angle for a shot...etc., etc...Now look at their videos....while still better than most they are nothing like they used to be
I bought the latest Realtree DVD and it's a load of rubbish...same big ranches they always hunt, big bucks killed left and right , the obligatory crap 3D shoot with stupid commentary from a "comedy team" (I use that term lightly)..throw in a couple of "hot chicks" to get us to actually take notice when the "Comedy team" is on
Most of the hunting shows are no better than any of the other crap on TV today...
What do YOU think?
Disclaimer: I'm not a Ted basher nor do I hate the Drury brothers..in fact Drury Bros make my fave videos..or at least used to. Bill Jordan..eh..no comment...

Jeff, I think that I have a blast in the woods no matter what the outcome. I also think that watching someone sit and not harvest an animal would be boring. I don't think killing is what hunting is all about but it is the only aspect that other hunters can enjoy through tv. I can't get excited by watching some guy scout on tv and find a supreme spot like I can If I'm doing it myself.

I like uncle Ted.
Our hunting styles do vary. I only archery & Rifle hunt in Montana during the general seasons. Uncle Ted hunts year round all over the country. I hunt a maximum of seven weeks a year. Uncle Ted hunts everything on the planet year round with his bow. I must say I do envy him.
The Nuge may come off a little strong to some people. I think hunters need a voice like his. He stands up to the extreme left wacko anti-gun, anti-hunters. I think if you love your sport? You should back uncle Ted. He is helping us in our fight to save our sport.
I would like to hunt with him sometime. I think it would be a blast.

I can think of a few specific things I don't like that involve the outdoors and hunting. But do I come on here and make post specifically to bash them...no. I can understand voicing your opinion if someone asks on a thread but If everybody starts post stating everything they dislike then these boards won't be much fun.

. Just remember: if your opinion differs from mine, then it's clearly wrong!

All it is about today is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
If people realised that these so called TV hunters will do anything for the kill you the viewer see's even killing a penned animal then editing it so it looks like the kill took place out in the open woods.
You dont see the corn piles or high fences or the people doing the drives to get these animals to come along right on que.
As far as calling them great hunters and advocates for our great sport I dont think so they do it for your hard earned $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Its a business purely and simple.

With the shows we have today there seems to be a simple recurring formula
1) show introduction
2) commercials
3) show hunters arriving at camp
4) Commercials
5) Show big deer walk into camera view
6) Show hunter kill deer and find deer..hunter thanx sponsors
7) more commercials
8) talk about how great XYZ ranch and ABC outfitters is
9) More commercials
10) Next show starts
rinse..lather..repeat...
I see this on Realtree and Buckmasters all the time..the guy is Hunting for 30 seconds of air time and then he freaks out "Big Buck! coming this way"..pulls up his facemask...grabs his bow off his EZ bow hanger from Realtree...show deer 500 miles away one minute with the zoom lens..next minute he's jumping over a fence or a creek 50 yards away...CUE STUPID "KILL" MUSIC....DEER looks around thinking something is up..goes back to eating/chasing does/licking branch..Hunter draws bow...whispers to camerman "You on him? Can ya see him"...Cameraman whispers back "OK..take him/shoot him" hunter either makes perfect or very poor shot..deer runs like hell...Hunter watches where deer goes...'WHOOT..HES DOWN...HES DOWN..YEAH BABY..WHOOT...DAMN I"M ABOUT FALL OUT OF THIS TREE...Whoa...gotta sit down...I'm shakin..WHOOT..YEAH BABY HES DOWN..HES DOWN..RIGHT OVER THERE (points)...WHAT A BUCK...WHAT A HUNT"
Hunting shows can be done better with folks with the right attitude and the $ to do so...the show can be entertaining, educational, and inspiring/exciting to the hunting public..
I suspect most hunters though don't expect more quality from their hunting shows and hunting heros...same with regular TV...people complain it's crap..yet they continue to watch said "crap" all the time
...so they get good ratings [:'(]sorry for the long post..hunting shows are a personal pet peeve of mine...

Wow that's a glowing recommendation from The Master himself!
