Default Liberty speed vs. Outback

A few weeks ago, I told you that I shot the outback and liberty, and slighty preferred the ouback. They were close, but the outback was a little quieter and had less vibration, kick, shock, etc. Not a big difference, but noticeable. When I made this comment to a local Bowtech enthusiast, he said, of course the outback was quieter, they do not shoot as fast as bowtechs at the same poundage. Knowing bowtech's are among the fastest bows on the market, i thought this made sense. The next time i was in the shop, I made sure both bows were set a 60lbs (liberty and outback) and used the same 380 grain arrow to test the speed. To my surprise, the outback shot 263 fps while the liberty shot 244 fps.

So, despite the outback being faster at comparable settings, it was also quieter, smoother, etc. Interestingly, I still felt like the liberty had a smoother draw cycle, though not hugely different fromt he outback.

As for how this relationship would change if bow were set a 70lbs, i don't know, but the above is based on my experience, without partiality toward either bow.

I cannot say that I am totally surprised by your findings. They are similar to what I have seen locally. I would offer that the slightly stiffer draw cycle and shorter valley on the Outback is the reason for speed advantage it has over the Liberty. The Outback's mass weight is what is taking the recoil and vibration out of the bow "better" than the Liberty.

Out of curiousity, were both 70 pound bows set to 60 lbs?

Thanks for the info.

w/428gr arrow 273fps w/ ke of 70.8
w/416gr arrow 276fps w/ ke of 70.4
w/412gr arrow 277fps w/ ke of 70.2
w/411gr arrwo 277fps w/ ke of 70.0
w/385gr arrwo 284fps w/ ke of 69.0
w/378gr arrow 287fps w/ ke of 69.1
w/305gr arrow 312fps w/ ke of 65.9

2nd bow is the liberty
w/491gr arrow 247fps w/ ke of 66.5
w/428gr arrow 263fps w/ ke of 65.7
w/416gr arrow 267fps w/ ke of 65.9
w/412gr arrwo 268fps w/ ke of 65.7
w/411gr arrow 268fps w/ ke of 65.6
w/385gr arrwo 276fps w/ ke of 65.1
w/278gr arrwo 278fps w/ ke of 64.9
w/305gr arrwo 302fps w/ ke of 61.8

based on this bow report the outback is faster and carrys more kenetic energy the liberty. i think you proshop guy was a little off. i own a outback and love it. but that is my preference. and my opionion that the outback is better.

The Outback will be faster than the Liberty because the Outback's cam is designed to store more energy than the Freedom cam on the Liberty. The Freedom cam is designed to be velvet smooth with little emphisis on speed. A better comparison would be the MightyMight or the Patriot VFT with the Outback. Mathews dosen't make the SQ2 or MQ1 anymore, which would be a better match up with the Liberty or Justice. The Freedom cam is not a fast cam but is meant to appeal to those that want an easy drawing and shooting bow.

Well - yes the Outback is Faster then the Liberty. The Liberty is one of Bowtechs slower bows. The Outback is a fine bow, and I am not trying to sway you either way but remember - the Outback weighs about 1lb more than the Liberty - So bare bow it has an advantage in shock / Jump / Vibration etc. Get them the same weight then test would be a fairer comparison.

Good luck - they are both winners
