that' s not an optimal shot. i agree with the other posters. you should' ve let the deer get away from the tree.

having said that, i missed a big six point a few year back that was actually scratching his ass on my tree. since then i have practiced looking down the shaft of my arrow for that shot rather than looking at a pin or sight.

I feel your pain, I rattled in two of the biggest bucks i' ve seen on stand in the same rattling sequence and missed them both low. Within a week i was practicing the shot in my backyard with a 3-d target and realized what a difficult shot it really is. Ohh yeah i haven' t had another big buck within 50 yards since those two.

It' s simply a matter of form and gravity: shooting straight down requires bending at the waist and also a matter of gravity...shooting straight down, there is none except straight down. Therefore when sighting in your bow during flatter trajectories, gravity has more of an effect. Straight down shots have no gravitational pull on the flight of the arrow. Sound right?

My experience has been at close range 1-5 yards my arrow is still on it' s upward flight up to approx. 10yds. Reason being my sight pin is about 4-5" above my arrow rest. Try comparing 2 yds to 10 yds and see what happens. You owe to the animal to wait till it is out from directly under your stand, vital area is greatly reduced compared to a broadside or angling away shot....just my 2 cents...Boss [:-]
