I know a few folks have tried the " rubber dip" on the chains with relatively good success. It does not last forever but reportedly does last longer than the original shrink tubing offered on their chains.

I used 5/8" I.D., 3/4" O.D. clear tubing on mine, two 6' pieces. Run a wire through the tube, dump some vegetable oil on the chain and pull it through. Use an old soldering iron to burn the holes through the tubing and you' re set.

I use the replacement heat shrink for the whole chain but over the center portion that makes the most contact with the tree I have placed some very heavy duty comercial grade heat shrink. You have to keep in mind that the double heat shrink area will not pass into the frame of the stand, so watch your placement. This also aids in placing your stand on the tree as the chain will retain a semi-curcular shape.
