Do broadheads and field points hit same POI?

I read your reply several times, but still not sure what you said!

Have to go with CG and others who agree with CG.

I liken field points vs. broadheads to dating your wife before you marry her.

As long as she is in the " field point" stage, everything is usually great. As soon as she becomes a " broadhead," everything changes. If you try and get her to act like a field point, your asking for trouble and many headaches.

You have to realize she is now a broadhead, and you must adapt to the changes she now imposes.

Also I might add, when dealing w/ fixed blade BH, your launch angle has to be PERFECT to avoid planing.....I' m talking within 1/4 millimeter....I know several very good archers that TRY to make their BH impact different. They want to make sure they can have consistent, predictable planing. If you have a BH that is tuned PERFECTLY if you induce torque to the right, the BH will go that way. IF you induce torque to the left, it will go that way also....It basically falls into the same category as target shooters that try to get a tail high, left tear.....they want the arrow to have " direction" out of the bow. With wings on the front, this is even more important.

I have two 2315 arrows, exactly the same length and fletch. Both of them are exactly tuned to my bow. One I tip with a 125 gr field point and one I put a 125 screw in Zwickey. At 30 yards, the filed point arrow hits again and again in a 2" ring, and the broadhead tipped one hits again and again 4" low and to the right of where the field tipped one is hitting.

Are both of these arrows flying the same ? No, they are not. Will both of them shoot through paper at 5 yards bullet holes ? Maybe, but obviously there is something different or they' d hit the same places at 30 yards, right ? Whats the variable we' ve changed ? The Broadhead - that is what is causing the low and to the right. I just don' t see how its possible that both arrows fly perfect but hit different places on the target. They ARE NOT flying the same, are they ?

Maybe I should clarify what I said earlier, Z.

On a hunting bow, tune for broadheads and the bow is tuned. Period. Broadheads do plane and that makes it especially critical for the bow to be tuned to them. Field points are not all that critical of bow tune and will fly great from a broadhead tuned bow, but the bow WON' T be tuned PERFECTLY for field points if tuned perfectly for broadheads. Point of impact will be different. Sometimes hardly noticeable, sometimes several inches.

Again, getting field points and broadheads hitting the exact same spot means you' re either lucky or you' ve fiddled around and gotten a compromize tune. Perhaps good enough for both but not perfect for either.

The fact is, just like Arthur P, I tune for BH first and when I' m done my BH and FP have perfect arrow flight. Outstanding groups, perfect bullet holes BUT sometimes have different impact points.....That' s my experience and yours may be different.

Even if perfectly tuned they may impact diff. because an arrow flexes as it is shot. When it flexes with a bh , there may be just enough wind resistance or stearing to slightly alter the flight, this is not present with fp' s. It is an inherent design of fixed heads. they fly and group perfectly, BUT impact a little diff than field points.

As stated there are times they hit together - this does not mean the BH is at its optimal tune. Group tune with broaheads and get super tight groups at longer yardages and who cares where fp' s hit.

Rack-attack - That could be, however the question still is - are two arrows that hit different places flying the same ? No, they are not, they cannot be. So is one flying better than the other ? I don' t know about " better" but defintely different, and the thing that makes them go that way ? A broadhead.

I' ve been there, done that, and few bows I ever owned were so well tuned that any broadhead would shoot from them. My Dad' s Q2 is a bow like that, he literally can have a quiver with each arrow having a different head and they' ll all shoot the same. I use to fight with Thunderheads and a High Country bow all summer and in the end would just adjust my sights. The thing that sucked was not being able to target shoot with FP' s without adjusting the sights again etc etc.

It can be done, where a bow has the same POI with any head. Its kudos to the bow and the shooter when it happens. When it doesn' t, good bowhunting can still be had with adjusting the sights and going that route, but that doesn' t mean that both the FP and the BH tipped arrows are flying equally as well, because I don' t think they could be and have different POI' s.

Broadheads and field points can have the same POI, but it takes some tweaking. After carefully setting up my bow, I was still 4 inches to the left. How did I get them to the same POI? I got the blades and the fletching perfectly aligned.... Call me crazy, but play with it and you will see the broadheads getting closer to your field points...
