I too have hunted within 75 yards of gut piles and seen deer actually check them out.....damn canabalistic
deer.

I've actually watched deer eat off of a gut pile In the winter when snow was on the ground. If I was to shoot any deer with In 3 weeks of the rut or during the rut I'd drag It out before gutting just so we all wouldn't sit there and BS the whole time and spread more human scent In that area In the woods. That right there Is the biggest factor I believe. Get In and out as quickly as you can If able.

i shot a dandy 8 point that was actually pawing and sniffing the gutpile from a doe i shot 2 days prior.

this year i watched a doe paw and scrape the gutpile from my sons 3 pointer for about 20 minutes. that piule was 8 days old.

I gut where they fall. Foxes take care of it in very short order. Just this year I killed a doe on Fri evening and killed that buck with the arrow sticking in it's back Sat morning from the same tree and it fell 7 yards from where I gutted the doe. That gut pile was already gone.
