I thought I could shoot...(Attention first year bowhunters!)
Well, I thought I could shoot. I got my bow back in order, set up at 20 yards (always 2 shot groups), and hit two with the shafts touching. I set up at 35, hit two with the fletchings touching. Set up at 50, two with the fletchings touching. Same at 65 yards. Got myself a BIG HEAD, walked away happy as hell.
And then something popped into my head. Figured I should set up the target, stand at ten yards, and shoot one arrow. Bullseye. Took a bunch of random steps back and to the side, try again, off about 3". Take more steps back to a random distance back and to the side, LOST THE ARROW. Took a bunch more steps back, (was somewhere between 40-50yds at this point), took the shot, and hit the target at the very top almost losing the arrow. Took steps foward to a random spot, and LOST THE ARROW.
My head has shrunk.....[&:]

First off shrew I sure hope your not planing on taking any 65 yard shots!! Give yourself a little time, like a few years.
As far as random unmarked distances I know a whole bunch of guys who have trouble with that. I have the kids toss plastic pop bottles or beer cansanywhere they want and then I try the shot with grassgrabbers/judo points. I shoot at them from a tree stand but at ground level. The kids are cruel and throw my targets behind the tree, under my feet, between trees ect. Thats when the ability to shoot unknown distances really comes into play.
There may be a few who can make 9 out of 10 65 yard shots, but not many at least not in a hunting scenario. It does sound like your ready for the woods, just let them get close and good luck bud.

No, no 65 yard hunting shots will be done here. As far as I'm concerned, my first pin is set at 20 yds, and untill I can read unmarked distances well, I dont plan on shooting any farther than that.
Thanks for the kind words.

I'm in MA shrewand have hunted CT so I knowyou would be lucky to see a deer at 65yds never mind taking a shot at one. You really should try the judo points and pop bottles.(not the2 liter). It's a great one man game if nothing else. I hope your shooting out of your stand as much as possible even if it's at ground level. Try a couple of shots at five yards froma stand 20 ft up. Thats a major eye opener.
Lots of deer it CT with a bunch of biguns thrown in.Your season has gotta be just about to openso whack one.

Unknown distance should not affect left to right, only up and down.
I suspect the unknown distance affected your form, like you did not follow through because you wanted to see how it flew. Just a guess.
If you can shoot known distances, you can also shoot unknown distances. Remember, you should select an aiming point on a deer that allows for some miss judgement of the yardage, that still getsa vital hit. If you think a deer may be at 25-30 yds, put your 30 yd pin on the heart and release.
