IMO gettinga pass through in more important than the larger cut.

Might be smarter to go with a fixed head at 48 lbs.

Tiffany shots 54lb and 3 blade rages and she has pass thru's on most of her deer.
Not the one I saw, she didn't even get CLOSE!!!! That thing had 10" of arrow sticking out of it. The episode with Jackie Bushman was the only one I've seen, but on that one she certainly didn't have a pass-through.

As someone else said, I think it a LOT about marketing!!!!

ORIGINAL: SouthDakotaHunter

I was wondering the same thing a while back, so I actually picked up the phone and called Rage.

The person I visited with said that they recommend a minimum of a42lb draw weight...

I mentioned KE a couple of times but the just kept going back to the draw weight. Guessing it's a lot easier to have a 'basic' draw weight to tell people than the amount of recommended KE...
This is where I have to disagree greatly, but again the person you were talking to is very likely and idiot anyway. But a 42# Bear Whitetail ain't gonna do nearly as well KE wise as a 42# Equalizer, and if the person is drawing 24" vs. 29", there's another HUGE difference. Personally, I think now less than 50ft/# would be a pretty safe bet. And if that means a 70# Bear Whitetail that only get 48ft/#'s is ruled out while a 50# 82nd that gets 53ft/#'s is in, then that's the case, but I think KE and Momentum are significantly better indicators of likely performance!!!!

If you don't get a pass through, you may not have a very good blood trail.....
I would go with a cut on contact or pyramid point.

As previously stated, I really dont think Rage cares what poundage you shoot, as long as your buying their heads. By saying 42 pounds, they are effectively including probably 95% of the bowhunting crowd.

funny you mention that SDhunter....

to me, THEY should know better....thats BS if ive ever heard it....

what about a 42 lb long bow???

what about an OLDER than dirt compound set at 42lbs???

to me, that just blows them out of the water in terms of credibility. granted, the person you talked to might not have ever even fired a bow....just saying what they are told to say.....

still makes no sense....

and as you found, they stumbled around KE...mention momentum and other factors and their head woulda started to spin....

plain and simple those things are cutting massive amounts of everything they encounter....they are going to require more energy than a typical broadhead to get enough penetration....and i want a pass through...

glad im educated......

Depending on how much emphasis you put on a complete pass thru (I put a lot), I'm not convinced 60# KE is enough.

My personal experience suggests it is not enough.

Its not the KE it loses in opening the blades but rather the additional energy required to get a 2" blade all the way through 2 sides of the hide and the body cavity as opposed to a smaller diameter head.

Why not something more sensible like a Snyper if one wishes to use that style head with a lower KE setup? It's just seems downright irresponsible to me that a manufacturer would suggest using a 2" cutting diameter head with a setup that generates KE in the high 30's.

The thing with the Rage's is that they arent an over the top mechanical. They require much less blade movement to open up as oppose to the over the tops. They have a slip cam system, where the shoulders of the blade are pushed back on contact making the blades deploy. Most other mechanicals are over the top, and they need more KE to deploy and penetrate because of the way they are designed.

The thing is that most people wouldnt consider shooting a 2" fixed blade (if such a thing was around), much less a mechanical, with a 42 lb setup.
