How far will you take a shot?

Although I have killed numerous animals at greater ranges. My self imposed limit is approx. 50 yards.
Knowing whether a shot is riight and/or makeable is much more than knowing the range. There are many factors that come into play.
Experience is ultimately the best teacher in shot selection situations.
The worst thing that can happen to a young hunter is to get lucky when he takes a Bad shot and kill that Deer. If he had wounded and lost that Deer he would have hopefully learned a lesson. Being successful while making a Bad decision usually takes more than one Bad experience before he will realize.............. Hey!! This is not a Good Thing!![8D]

Some of you guys need to relize that some people on these forums dont live in texas and all these places with lots of deer, some of useare from states with less deer and if wehave a shot at a deer at 60 yards and are able to make the shot then we will. We dont get many chances.I WOULD NEVER SHOT OVER 35 YARDS THOUGH! just wanted to put that out there

And for the record, not everywhere in Texas has lots of deer.

I wouldn't hit a golf shot with a forced carry of 280yds.
But I'm not going to criticize the guy who CAN make that shot. Kudos to him.
My effective range has gotten shorter. 20......25max.

Not much for deer anymore...espicially here in California, but for hogs and bear, I really like them 30yrd or closer shots. If I can't get them any closer, and I can't get any closer without being busted, then I am not doing my job...

I practice out to 60 yards, but I'm not consistent.
"Pretty good" shootingtime after time at 40 yards (fairly consistent 4'' or less groups any day).
At 30 yards even the bad shots are still good, the bad shots are still inside a 4'' group.
I would consider a 30 yard shot on a "calm" deer.
I've never actually taken a shot past 22 yards.
Targets don't move, deer do.

It blows me away to see all the claims of killing animals at these long range yardages

If you want to shoot good at 30 than practice at 70,if you can`t group 6 arrows within 4 inches at 60 yards than you don`t practice enough,I would shoot a standing deer at 80 yards and not feel it was risky because I`m confident that my bow will do the work if I do my part, having said that, the picture you see of me is actually-me shooting a 10 dollar bill at 100 yards,I challanged my uncles and cousins to all put 10 bucks in and try to beat me with thier guns (no scopes allowed) I took 90 dollars that day,2nd shot but the first was`nt that far off and would have killed a deer.
