30 yards. If I could hit a pie plate at 60 yards, it would still be 30 yards. I don't remember ever shooting my bow over 40 yards, just never have. Only shoot at 40 because it makes me better at 30 and in.

I shoot alot at 40-50 yards during practice but my max range in the woods is 25 yards. Way to many things can happen before an arrow gets to an animal at long distances. Most of the deer I have shot have been under 20 yards and I plan on trying to keep it that way.

60 and 80 yard shots at game? Elk hunt, maybe I can buy that one. Deer?? Learn some patienceor move your standif you are flinging at 60+.
I'd bet these same guys would look at a football field and swear its a solid 160 yards long.

Compound-25yards
Recurve-15 Yards
To me its about getting close, the closer the better. But, if you know you can make a long shot within your set limits go for it!

ya i know i had two come in at 15 yards last year on a stand site i scouted once before hanging the stand.
The place i plan on hanging it this year. is right off a creek and only aboue 5 yards from the main trail the deer use

Tim If I remember right you have yet to get one with your bow. If I was you I'd keep them some what closer then what you just described. Trust me, you can get a deer to come in under 20 yards, have some patience and it will happen. Good luck!

my pins are set for 20 30 40
i thought about buying a five pin sight. The thing is i am not sure i would want to shoot a deer out much farther then 40 maybe 50 but not 70.

When I'm hunting pie plates, I'll shoot out to 70 yards. Never had to track one more than a few inches, but they taste like *%(&^*@!
I agree with the above statements wholeheartedly; also don't forget that stated arrow speeds are initial velocity and they start to slow down as soon as they are launched. That 275 fps given above, with deceleration, will take something like 3/4 of a second to go the 60 yards. One step in that time results in a very poor shot and it baffles me that so many people don't seem to consider that variable when shooting game.
The farthest I've shot a deer at is 32 yards and the closest is 11 and all my hunting is done on the ground. Great fun getting close under those circumstances.

An arrow traveling at say 275 FPS is not fast and will take a long time to reach an animal at 60 yards. They can move a long way at that range.
I don't like to talk down to anyone here, but I do have to say that the comment about if 130+ farther is what brings a bad name to our sport. It should never be about the size of the horns. If anything, you should have more respect for a more mature animal... Sorry, but I just had to say it.

ya i think your right and wrong.
i have hear alot of bad story's non out to 100 yards people know there going to get bashed on here for it.
Any bad shot i have i tell you guys so you can help me solve what ever problem .
Last year i shot over one when i was letting my bow down. then i shot under one. i did not hesitate to tell you guys i messs up but both shots were at 15 yards along way from 100 or even 60.
I am just glad i did not wound either.

No one is going to admit to wounding animals at long range yardages. It seems we always here the successful story's but never the bad story's.
It blows me away to see all the claims of killing animals at these long range yardages

no i know what you said i think there are a few out there that if they shot a deer at 60 or even 100 would own up to it i would.
I would say hey guys i missed this deer or wounded it what did i do wrong.
I would expect you guys would say shoot closer.
i saw Ted shoot a buck that was looking right at him with no sight with a compounds at 100 yards. he killed it but i thought what the heck.
I even stopped watching him for a few months

right now im comfortable out to 30 yards. but im going to practice a lot more over the summer, and hopefully i can have that out to 35. i am NEVER going to take a shot past 40. even if i can shoot comfortably out to 100 yards. its just not too ethical in my opinion.
