I seen one here in Illinois a few years back. Didn't remember the black stripes on it though. I just remember trying to find out what it was on the internet.

But we do have these things. Bald face Hornet
These buggers hurt!! and they are tough!! Two of them were on a death match together and we dropped a railway tie about 4 feet long on them and when it toppled over they both flew up and chased us, I've never ran that fast in my life!!!
