You grouse hunters better be aging your birds before you shoot them as well. Might be a young one in that group!
The young ones are better eating.;)
Grouse are awesome tasting birds, no dought in that! Gotta be the best tasting bird I've ate.:D
Not only great eating but great sport, stomping one day old baby grouse would beabout this much morechallenging than shooting a doe fawn.

IMO, there is no difference taking a doe fawn and a mature doe. Either way you are killing an animal. For management purposes, its best to take does of all ages rather than just mature animals.

How much die off due to winter do you have down there? Or are you just worried the deer aren't getting as big as they should due to not getting enough nutrition?
Probably very little die-off. Our NCWRC says we have about a 15-18% mortality rate of those who make it through the first season (actually....this encompasses the entire herd)......and the research I've recently read says that the fawn abandonment rate might be as high as 50%. Nature taking care of nature if you asked me.

Am I worried they're not getting enough nutrition? Well...yeah. That's the point of thinning the herd.

Maybe you need to open up the land to a youth hunt doe only the first couple weeks or for a season.
Can't. I'm the only one hunting most of it.....and I'm extremely lucky to be there, myself. Fickled landowners.

If I were hungry or someone else I knew was, I would arrow a doe fawn. Other than that, I have NO desire to kill a fawn.

What I find funny is some of the guys who say "Shoot what you want" for a buck, get all manly about shooting a fawn
So what is it guys? I have no desire to kill a 1.5 buck, and it's about as challenging as shooting a fawn during the rut, LOL

If it's legal why do so many care[&:] You think a wolf says "Too small"?

It's a choice of the hunter.

Thought you were trying to get it more in balence. Didn't know you were over carrying capicity. Is it the same way on the other property you gained permission on? Waht you going to do if your hunting different area's now? Going to be hard to make your "goals" if your on different properties too.

Haven't you invited a a bunch of members to hunt there? I know how it is to have fickled property owners.

If I were you I'd pick up the gun too, and really put some deer down.

I am.

It is.

I don't know, yet....but I doubt it.

I realize that. I've asked this myself. I have to make a choice.

I've invited a "few". I've hunted with two of them. There will be more.;)
