What would it take to make you kill a doe fawn?

And what's your reasoning?

It's in front of me:Dand I have a tag.
I shoot a doe fawn every year late season. Just enough meat for gramps;)

I have sat next to gramps who passed a 120''+ 8 to shoot a doe fawn[:-]LOL

If I can tell it's not a button, and I want meat, it's getting an arrow.

A misjudgement ................ I would never intentionally kill a fawn .... I have no problem with those that do, though

RE: What would it take to make you kill a doe fawn?

That I was 100%positive it was a doe fawn and not a button buck.

If I had antlerless tags left later in the bow season... december till the end.

Wouldn't do it. Intentionally

..... or half full freezer!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing "makes" me kill any deer, I kill deer because I want to and I have a love for venison! I'll kill a doe fawn, with no spots, with either weapon a gun or bow no problem!

Schultzy 03-29-2008 11:45 AM

RE: What would it take to make you kill a doe fawn?

I've done it numerous times and I know I'll do it again. I will not shoot a button buck for obvious reasons.

RE: What would it take to make you kill a doe fawn?

It would take me being able to positively identify it as a doe as opposed to a button buck and then it come into bow range. In my eyes a doe is a doe.

one arrow. because I'm a fairly good shot.
When I choose to shoot a fawn I check to see if its a nubbin. I want to take a doe fawn.

RE: What would it take to make you kill a doe fawn?

Well when we group hunt, we usually drive, and the rules is, if it brown its down, our group of 25 hunters just shoots whatever, as they are not trophy hunters. But I hold out for a nice buck, and of that dosent happen after a couple of day, I'll take whatever I can get. When I bowhunt, I won't shoot a doe, fawn, inferior buck, untill there is like 3 days left in the season, we also to deer drives sometimes when we bow hunt, but that is when we are desperate and in our final days.

If I want to and it's legal. (This will also depend on whether a buck may be headed my way.)

I will also add, if Im not hunting an area that is holding a big buck, or the land is being developed, I will shoot more than one doe fawn, and or a button buck or small buck if I have not shot one all year and the land is going to be a shopping center next yr, which is happening to much of my land now!!!

Vabowman 03-29-2008 12:05 PM

RE: What would it take to make you kill a doe fawn?

Ridgefactor, with all due respect sir, it is not a sport. A sport is a competion or game, bowhunting or hunting in general is a traditional pass time, a passion like art, not for sport. Don't take this the wrong way, just voicing my opinion. If you believe in healthy herds, someone has to shoot fawns too, does it have to be you?? Nope, but somebody does.

to me it's both .... a fawn yields very little meat, compared to a nice adult doe .... it's alot of work to properly butcher a deer ......

If anyone eats veal and then states they wouldn't kill a fawn, they are being hypocritical...;)

I almost did a similar thread to this one a few days ago after seeing some negativity with people shooting fawns but later decided not to being It might get fairly heated!

We did raise a few when we were kids. Some of the best memories ever Steve.

I bet. I've always wanted to do that. My dad and I stumbled upon one in some switch grass late in May. He was a little button buck as you could see the 2 little black dots on top of its head and he couldn't of been more then a day or two old. The doe watched us from about 30 yards out, we slowly walked away and watched the doe come back to her little buck. One of the neatest things I've seen.

A D&DH article sparked this one, for me.

Like someone else said....ALL I need is a broadside shot.

"I" would be doing the herd here a disservice if I passed on a doe fawn. After reading the article....I am assured of this.

No wrong answer. Hunting is very personal.

An "earn a buck" requirement.

Jeff you are certainly correct on this one. Ask any farmer on the eastern shore or in Northern Va, or even here in Southeast Va, and they willtell you that fawns eat soybeans and peanuts too.;)

with a bow, as long as it aint got buttons, im shootin.
with a gun its a different story, its got to be a fairly nice buck, or an adult doe, thats when ill squeeze the trigger

RE: What would it take to make you kill a doe fawn?

rory, this is a great statement, things do become much different with age and experience and weapon.

RE: What would it take to make you kill a doe fawn?

if the deer herd was what it was 5 years ago in my area, it would take a well placed arrow...alot of my areas were real similar to your area in NC before we underwent herd reduction...large numbers of deer and buck to doe ratio was horrible. now things are IMO dang near perfect in most my areas....i hunt the bucks...let the rifle hunters take care of the does...they complain about no deer but STILL drag out does...

if im in an area i still see a ton of deer, like where i killed my BB in flintlock season this year, i wont hesitate to take a yearling, or any doe for the freezer. i THOUGHT my BB was a doe...it was a quick situation and pretty hectic couple minutes...2 yearlings came running right towards me...i thought they were both doe fawns..turned out to be a button buck...i still would bet them both to be does not BBs...oh well...

that area is out of whack majorly and still has a ton too many deer because noone doe hunts. the land owners "trophy buck hunt" and only allow us down in the flintlock season...they say they have no problem with us because they know we usually take does, and even if we took bucks, they wouldnt care because they kill theirs every year regaurdless...

very true, with a gun, ive killed 6 in 5 years of deer hunting, with a bow, ive got 0 in 3 years (serious years). i know that with a gun, if i waited till the last day, i could still put a deer on the ground fairly easily, with a bow, not too sure about. its just so much harder getting them within 40 yards. which is one of the reasons im never stopping, the challenge, and the rush of having a deer right under your tree.

Vabowman 03-29-2008 01:34 PM

RE: What would it take to make you kill a doe fawn?

What are you not understanding about that statement?? Many times over the years guys will change their thoughts on what they will shoot. When I was young I would shoot any deer if it was legal. After 20 yrs, I pass on deer, much more than I used too. With the gun, I will pass on deer depending on the area and/or mood Im in.Up until about 3 years ago, I shot just about any deer with the bow, now I will pass on lots of them depending on the situation. I will also let it fly if the cards areall right for that particular hunt. Got it??;)
