Average 3-4 deer per year @ $100 per deerX 10 years as opposed to the do it yourself expenses............ do the math. After you have the basics you need there really is minimal expenses year by year after that.

Stainless steel work table 200 ~~ Its nice and all but do you really need it????

Good grinder 200~~ This is true...I did buy an el cheapo at wal mart for $75 bucks this year and it has had 4 deer through it so far this year and working like a dream??

knife kit 50.00~~This is a must.... I have a lansky 5 stone sharpening kit $45 and for now I am using my buck knives but will be investing insome filet or boning knives(this is the way to go)!!

Sausage stuffer 100~~Im not sure but my El cheapo grinder from wal wart came with one so id say that a $200 one will come with one as well???

Meat slicer 100.00~~Whats wrong with a knife??

Good digital scale 50.00~~Just wondering what your weighing? Im guessing you want to measure your packages of burger and such? I would say you could look around and find a dependable non digital for $20 or less??

Meat tub 19.99~~I use the table..... but have you thought about some cheap pots and pansor such???

Smoker 200.00~~I dont have one but it would be nice!!!

Cutting boards 40.00~~I use some wooden ones but an option that I think is nice is if you have any discount type of hardware stores see if they have any old or broken counter tops, if you can pick some up cheap cut to size a few of them and you havea few nice cutting boards??

Vacuum sealer I have ~~I have one as well $120 foodsaver, but its not the price of the foodsaver that gets you its thedamn bags that make you takeout a small loan to buy.... I actually do all my burger, steaks, and etc... in ziploc freezer bags. Itsmuch cheaper and the meat dont last long enough around myhouse to worry about freezer burn.

Total 960.00
It would tke12 deer at 85 a deer to make it back

One things for sure if you do your workshop up like you want, it will be sweet!! I actually just think you could get started for way less then what your thinking? I would save a couple bucks to get started and buy the other stuff along the years when you can find good deals on everything. Never pay full price for stuff, thats just unheard of. Haha

Good Luck!!

WesternMD has a good point. If you want to get technical, all you really need to get started is a knife, some freezer wrap, and masking tape. All the other stuff is convenience and add ons. They are all nice to have and sometime down the road should probably have. But, your startup cost with all that included is way too high IMO.

Wow, I'm seeing a lot of expense to butcher a deer. I take a deer from the woods to the freezer with nothing more than a knife.

Well okay, I do use my Saw zaw to take the legs off but it can be done with cheap hacksaw.

I think you spent way too much money on things.
You can piece things together over several years to save costs, you also don't need all the items you listed. 90% of the things I use for deer cutting are used for other things.
For knives I use my hunting knife and a fillet knife.
grinder I paid $100 for about 10 years ago.
Cutting boards are used weekly for preparing dinner. I have every thing from cheap plastic ones to NICE wood ones.
I have meat tubs but they were bought for me, I went years without them.
I do havea vacuum sealer. Get the models that they discontinue. THey can be had much cheaper.

i know some of the stuff is high.
they have grinders now that are 100 bucks and electric .
but the hole the meat goes through is small and causes the temp to go up in the meat from heat from the grinder i have no problem with them though.
as for cutting boards i have a cheap one plastic got it from walmart for 12 bucks
but when it comes to uncooked meat epically deer meat i use a independent board for my meat and i wont to have three for butchering

as for the table you could go to Lowe's buy a lam. counter top for 50 50 bucks or less and build a cheap 2x4 frame
i plan to buy stainless or some kind of metal for ger control
for the meat tubs thee 20 bucks for 3 tubs so i figure it is worth the 20 bucks for them
as for the knifes i have a size star cutlery set i got from ronco great knifes you get like 40 knifes for 50 bucks with shipping and now there buy one get one set free i like them plan to buy a set next month

you do not need everything i listed a smoker you can get for50 bucks but i plan t smoke alot of my deer meat as well as make my own porkham and bacon so i would use it all yearsame with the grinder and stuffer

i plan to spend every penny i listed might take me some time but i hope my the ed of next season i have must of it might evensee about taking a butcher class and start doing it for other people
the house next door is forsale and i am thinking aboutbuying it because it is 10 feet from mine and the lot would be great for apool and 2 car garage and if i do the current garage will be come my hunting/ butcher area ihope if the ours house cheap and since the foundation is gone and needs redone and the cement porch is falling off i think it willbe

ok i have seen a few post about how to butcher how diys it or drops it off
but is it realy cost effative to diy it when it comes to deer.
heres what i figure it would take me to get the stuff to do it myself
how many of you have spent hundrads or even thousands

Stainless steel work table 200
Good grinder 200
Nice knife kit 50.00
Sausage stuffer 100
Meat slicer 100.00
Good digital scale 50.00
Meat tub 19.99
Smoker 200.00
Cutting boards 40.00
Vacuum sealer I have

Total 960.00
It would tke12 deer at 85 a deer to make it back

Option equipment
Meat band saw 400
Dieghtrater be it a few small modes or big one 150.00
Total 1510
At 85 dollars a deer it would take me 18 deer to make that back

I think I could get everything I need for around 500 if I cut some corners but I would not wont to work with less because then you must by cheaper equipment which would break sooner

I plan to do it myself I plan o have a good supply of what I need for next year

But I am not doing it to save money but because I wont to and think everyone should at least know how

So how much do you guys spend to save the cost for the butcher is it really a cost saving method?
Your nuts! A knife, a #32 grinder and some freezer bags. The grinder was 50 bucks. I do on average 6 deer a year. I use the kitchen.

With all that stuff you forgot a room addition. Tack on a good 25g for that.

It all just depends on your deer hunting situation and what you enjoy doing and spending your money on. If you're going to bag at least 12 deer in the next 10 years then it should be worth it. Heck, if you enjoy doing it yourself then it will be worth it for half that many of deer. Also, you know that you're getting your own kill in the end without any worries.

If it cost that much to cut up a deer I would quit hunting. I do some comercial deer procesing and I have under a $100 invested. A grinder, a bench, 3 Rapala filet knives and one electric knive sharpener! Done deal! Spend what you want, I cut up about 15-25 deer a year like this.
