I always preselect that way in the morning i know right where to be . I know exactly what setting to put the climber on too be level . I'll go to trees i already know or if there is new ones I'll climb it in the spring and make sure it is a good spot to familiarize my self with where i can shoot

Most of the time I have trees preselected with lanes cleared. I select based on the time of the year, wind direction, food and water sources (near water in early season or warm days; near food source late in the season).
I do on occasion see deer signs while going to a stand site, and will find a tree within bow range on the fly. You have to adjust to the deer.

I do both, just this last sat. I went in in the morning looking for a preselected tree and couldn't find it. went up a tree I knew was in the right general area and had deer coming right to the base of it and smelling me. realised I had set up right on top of one of the biggest trails in the area. um, sucked.
