Just out of curiousity.... Do you guys have trees "pre-selected" for the most part that you use with your climber? Do you go in ahead of time and trim shooting lanes around a bunch of trees you know you'll be using? Or do you find the best tree you can that gives you height and shooting options for the area you want to hunt that day?

Both...I do have certain trees that I climb each year and have done some trimming during the off season...As the season progresses, if I find a different spot that looks promising I move...Sometimes it's a tree that I've already picked out and marked, sometimes it's a tree that I pick out just before I climb.

Some areas I have hunted many times before and try to get in the same trees. I also go with a few friends who have many spots to hunt so I go in cold under their direction. Rarely do I do any trimming if at all. I prefer tight spots with very few shooting lanes. I find the deer end up moving all around in those areas.
The best advice above all that I can give you. If you pick a tree one morning and find that a group of does move through your area 100 yrds away during the rut, move right away. Get over to that trail. It can make the difference between watching the deer all morning or getting a shot on a nice buck that morning.

I have a few trees maked ready to climb, but like others said, i move if i have to. Depending on the wind, or if i happen to come accross a good spot on the way in/out of the woods.
Mornings i am almost always in a predetermined tree becuase i know what the place looked like when it was light out. Afternoon i will go ahead and sit in another tree if i come accross one in a good area.

I usually preselect and set-up a tree prior to hunting. I got a nice set-up on public land for opener of firearms in a couple of weeks, on top of a draw over looking a long line of oaks dropping tons of accorns, with travel corridors all around. Plan to be 25' up and able to see a couple hundred yards out into a clearcut that is 5 years old. I prepared this spot about two weeks ago.

If it's a morning hunt.....you can bet I've pre-selected a tree. I don't want to"wonder" as I wander in the dark. For afternoon sits.....I've been known to pick one on the fly.
