I also pack in a small tarp, some duct tape (good for anything), safety pins,and a 35mm film cannister filled with cotton balls that have been dipped in vaseline (makes for great fire starter fuel in a "worst case scenario")

Hey, at my age and time only one essential, My AARP card and a listing for all the nearby Holiday Inns.
