It all depends on the info being given. If its technical advice, then age doesn't matter to me. But if its advice on hunting, set-ups, tips, then it matters a ton.

So, Dan, if you were giving me advice on setting up a bow or something I would listen intently. If it were advice on hunting itself, I'd listen, but not as intently. (just using you as an example because of age)

I disagree with the above statement.Like Wash, I'm younger (22)and I've been hunting ever since I could walk. Take GMMATfor example, hes got us beat on age but how long has he been hunting?

GMMAT, didn't mean to call you out but your'e the first one to come to mind.BTW, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I typically don't know the age of someone posting here unless it is someone like Dan or one of the other regular contributors that routinely mentions their age.
Wisdom comes from experience, experience can be gained in different time periods depending upon time spent in the field and the correct interpretation of what is encountered in the field.
I think for everyone it is better to listen and take information in than to believe themselves to be an authority, the old two ears and one mouth expression, meaning we should listen twice as much as we talk.I believe a younger person has to go about his or her interaction more cautiously to be taken seriously or to be given their due. There is a bias toward people believing with age comes experience and wisdom.I personally don't care how old someone is,if they know what they are talking about!

I really do not notice that much. Sometimes you can tell when a "kid" is posting and it shows in the content and that can make me laugh at the most. By kid I mean like maybe not even a teenager yet. Some teenagers that have hunted alot with there dads and family so they can give good info that maybe they have not done but have seen. I also am a man of majority rules so no one person influences my decisions when I make post questions, but what the group thinks as a average regardless of age. Sometimes I see older folks talking straight out of their butt and I know they a making up a good line of BS as they type. Just all depends.

Hey tsoc, that reminds me of a saying one of my high school teachers taught me, back in 1985--Kind of corney, but very true. "A wise old owl sat in an oak. The more he saw the less he spoke. The less he spoke the more he herd. Why can't we all be like that wise old bird??"

Matt and Dan have both pretty much summed it up for me.

It absolutely matters! I mean, seriously, is there anyway that a teenager can offer serious meaningful info on say hunting trophy class whitetails? You'd be hard pressed to keep my attention compared to the guy whose been hunting since BEFORE you were born! You ony learn from life experiences, both mistakes and successes, and it simply goes to show that a teenager simply doesn't bring that much to the table. I mean, we were all there at one time and know better. So my answer is YES, age can and does make a huge difference to me. That being said, it's generally pretty easy to tell someones age by their info.... there's just a point in a thread where you know it's a "kid" or a "newbie".

Well sure it matters. When someone tells me he's been bowhunting for 2 or 3 or 5 years and has killed a deer or hopes to kill his first this year.... well I don't think I'm going to gain much information there. It's like who would you want to fix your computer, Bill Gates or the computer Geek in middle school? Of course it has a bearing on things. Anyone that says it doesn't hasn't thought it through. Oh I'll listen and read, but the inexperience and the innocence does come through. People can talk the lingo easy enough with all that's available to them today....but until they've walked the walk many times... they just don't usually understand what they're saying. That doesn't mean we don't like the conversation. It just means I still know a whole hell of a lot more about deer hunting with a bow than most.[8D][8D]

As far as I'm concerned, it's the quality of the experience and yearsthat matters. When I say quality I mean those who go out and hunt by themselves and learn what works and what doesn't.

I'm sorry but I do not put too much credence in "I've been hunting 7 years" when the young man is only 15 year old! Your not hunting, someone else isTAKING you hunting.

Don't get me wrong, it's good to be taught, my father showed me how to hunt and took me hunting with him. I started out very young about asfar back as I can remember. I thought I knew what I was doing back then too. But It's when I went off to college in 1983 (18 years old) and started hunting on my own did I realize I hada lot to learn!

Some things can only be learned through trial and error and the latest and greatest books or videos while containing great and usefull information will not always work in your situation sometimes it can only be figured out by putting boots on the ground and doing it.

It's those folks that have "been there and done that" that I tend to listen to more intently.

it's generally pretty easy to tell someones age by their info.... there's just a point in a thread where you know it's a "kid" or a "newbie".
Ain't that the truth.

There is a lot of information to be learned on this site from young and old alike and I am still learning every day and from each and every one of you but there is just no way of getting around experience, it only comes with time in the field.

Dan

There are so many things to sort outwith age just being one of them with all the posters on here. I am more interested in the hunting side of archery. I wouldn't be a good one for advice in terms of the techincal side of archery. I am overtwice your age and have asked advice from you.

For hunting advice... Imight notlook to someone who kills 20 plus deer a year in a zoo and could be older then dirt itself. Sure he has a lot of kills over the yearsbut how much hunting has been invovled??
