Not sure if it is federal law or state by state law, but here in NJ all wildlife is owned by the state

If its not my deer as soon as I shoot/wound it, why is against the law to not attempt to recover your deer/turkey.etc.. If its still the states deer then let them worry about the carcass. I can shoot as many as I want, as I long as I dont tag it, right.[&:][8D]
It Maryland it becomes your deer once you shoot it or wound it, before that it is the state's deer.

08.03.10.03
.03 Crippled Game.
Every game bird or game animal wounded by hunting and reduced to possession by the hunter shall be immediately killed.

08.03.04.03
.03 Tagging and Reporting Deer and Wild Turkey.
..................
4) Any person killing a deer or turkey shall:
(a) Attach a game field tag completed in ink to the head of the deer or leg of the turkey; and
(b) Record in ink the species, date, county of harvest, sex, and weapon class on the hunter's big game harvest record before removing the carcass from the place of the kill.
(5) The completed game field tag shall remain attached to the deer or turkey until the carcass is either:
(a) Processed by the hunter for consumption;
(b) Disposed of by a processing facility; or
(c) Left with a taxidermist.

Sorry you must first reduce it to possession, before you own it in Md.

Sorry to break the news to everyone here on this board, but I own all the deer out there and I let you all hunt them via state regulations. I would apreciate it if you would finally start paying that small fee to me so I can maintain your sport.[8D]

You have reduced it to posession once you shoot it, either killing it or wounding it.

Sorry Bruce but your wrong. Go back and reread it. It's a two part sentence there with the word "and". Wounding it is only half the battle. You must possess it.

True, but when he is called to determine the posession of the deer I do believe his word on the matter will be the last one unless, of course, someone wanted to go to court over a deer. Personally, if there were a dispute with another hunter then the rule of first blood should matter. If there was still a problem with the other hunter then I would just let him have it. If I follow all of our laws here I can take 36 deer each season. One deer is not going to get me in an uproar .

EDIT: Actually more than 36. In some counties you can take unlimited does.

In the PA bowhunter ed. class they teach the first "mortal wound" will take possission of the deer.
