The first 2 deer that I shot with a bow were running. I was 12 and 13 when I did it, with a recurve in 1968 & 1969. Back then it was way more common than it is now. I about slept with that bow back then![:-]

I've taken shots at walking deer with my slug gun and pistol, walking coyotes with my rifle. Moving upland and waterfoul birds...all the time.

With my bow however, I will not shoot unless the deer is stopped and I have a good clear shot of the vitals. I have a self imposedyardage limit of 40 +/-but honestly haven't shot at anything past 30yds in a long time. Most of my stands are located in spots whereI don't have any lanes past 30 yds.....makes my decision easy and limits long shot opportunities all together.

Thats just me....

Why John Deer, why would you think that?
Now that you brought him up, let me inform you about his latest post on shooting running animals. I was going to use this same reference without names and see if anyone was paying attention to him and his ramblings.

With a vidcam rolling & an eye witness, I rolled a running coyote at no less than 500yds this morning with a puny .223 60gr softpoint outta my sniper Browning A-bolt. Then when he attempted to raise up, I hit him again! In the glowing TX snow, I glowed even more!! Plus 3 shoats with a single arrow. A fine 8pt whitetail, 8 hogs & a furry yote in 2 days. Say YOWZA!!!

Also in one of his earlier videos he shot a spanish goat at 100 yards and on a dead run. Yes he got the animal, lucky shot. How many shots like these end up in wounded animals for the sake of video? My guess, quite a few.

This is not respecting the animals, this is respecting the almighty $$ for the sake of getting something on video for SOTW.

I say it really depends on your skill, how you feel at the time, the conditions and how the animal is acting.

Me personally;

Bow I like to limit myself to 25 yards or so. And I am talking about known yardages, not guessing. I might try a 30 or 40 yard shot if the conditions were perfect, I knew the yardage and the deer was very relaxed offering a very high percentage shot angle.

If I'm not sure about the yardage it would have to be 20 and in since that is about the farthest I judge well by eye.

With a shotgun, that would depend on which gun and the weather conditions. If it is windy or raining I won't shoot near as far. With my dedictated slug on a decent day 100-120 yards at this moment because that is where I know my gun is accurate to and I trust it. With my smooth bore probably 70 or 80 yards on a relaxed deer. It is fairly accurate out to 100 but I don't know if I trust it just yet.

With my Inline Muzzle loader I will shoot out to 150 yards. It is sighted in at 130 yards and will shoot point blank (3 inches high to 3 inches low from 25 to 150 yards) out to that distance. I get around 3 inch groups at 150 yards with it.

I don't own a centerfire and they are not legal in my area of Michigan so I don't know. I suppose if I were to hunt up north I would probably get a .243 and limit myself to 200 yards with decent ammo and good shot placement. Providing the gun was accurate enough at that range, which I don't see why it wouldn't be.

P dogs with my 17 HMR about 130-140 yards with V-max ammo on a calm day.

I will not shoot at a running deer regardless of weapon or range. It isn't something I practice so I will not try it in the field.

I agree with the others, if I don't feel 100% I can make the shot I don't pull the trigger.

As far as I feel comfortable.

And do not judge me for taking a 40+ yard shot, if and when I ever do. If I'm comfortable in both my ability to execute the shot and the animal is cooperative, you have absolutely no right to judge me or anyone else.

Ethics, be it shot range or anything else, is a personal matter. No one can tell me how to hunt. You can pat me on the back for a job well done or you can grit your teeth and walk away. The choice is yours. But you better believe that if you try and tell me I'm wrong for how I hunt or why I hunt that way you'll be leaving with my boot up your arse.
