Respect for animals

How many yards do you consider YOUR range when shooting at an animal vs what would you consider out of range and disrespect for the animals, no matter what they are?

YOUR range? Disrespect for the animal?

Bowhunting?

Shotgun?

Rifle?

Crossbow?

I can't answer that. TOO MANY VARIABLES.

I only bowhunt.....and I practice to 60 yds. So,.....if I KNEW the animal wouldn't move.....and that there was no wind.....I'd shoot at 60 yds. Now....add in variables like wind.....live animal that can move in any direction in a split second.......weather......etc..., etc..., etc... and my effective ydg. goes down with each circumstance. I've never sht at a deer outside 33 yds....and I had no idea it was that far, then (I thought it was 24-28).

Disrespecting the animal is when you have doubts and still shoot.

That is a very good way of putting it.

I'll take a stab without stating variables.
Bow for me out to 30 yards from a tree stand and 40 from the ground if know distance with good view. Disrespect for the animal range for me? Over 40 yards.
Shotgun, with open sights about 80-90 yards for me, and disrespect for the animal for me, past 100-110 yards with open sights.
Rifle for me, about 250 yards with a scope. I would say disrespect for the animal for me, past 350 yards.
No idea for crossbow.

Let's take up another point on top of these questions before i get to my final point.

Would it be disrespectful to shoot at an animal that is full out running?
At say YOUR practiced yardages? or is it disrespectful to the animal to shoot it on an all out run?

Tell you what, when or if I ever master the 3D courses and I get 12 scores for every shot, then I will work on doing the same for a walking animal, then a brisk walk, followed by a jog, and only then will I start to practice the full running shot;)

And no, I wouldn't shoot at a running animal with my bow. I'm not that good.

I won't shoot at a running animal with a bow. I may give it a poke if using a shotgun and it is close like 5-10 yards, open opportunity and my shotgun is on.
