Ive been turkey hunting for about 20 years and im a preety good caller but my sons better he just started turkey hunting 2 years ago and has already killed 2 huge toms, i bought him the Mad cheery bomb box call, and Heavy Metal slate call. What he usaully does is start out with a fewyelps to get the toms interest and then some slight purrs to start him in then he use clucks till the shot. Using this style hes called in turkey for both of us including one really feisty hen that almost sat in our laps.[8D]

You just have to try different things until you find what works for that particular bird. I always take my box call and several mouth calls, sometimes just switching calls can be enough to work. My last resort is to gobble with my box call, I don't like doing that because they can run straight to you so fast you can't be ready. I think one of the best locator calls is a cheap silent dog whistle.

Gregh put down the thunder stick, shoot one with a bow. Does treebark work on Turkey's?

I will be hunting them with a bow in the spring from now on. It's just that, on a whim, I bought an 11-87 last spring on the way up turkey hunting. It's a great gun and I'll just be using it for fall turkeys from now on. That way I can get back to bowhunting for whitetails faster in the fall.[:-]

I have no idea what I'm doing either. I've called in probably 35 or 40 gobblers, mostly for others to shoot. I don't care for the meat. I mainly use a diaphram call but carry all the other things, box, slate, glass. I just listened to a Ben Rodgers Lee tape about 30 years ago and tried to copy him. I still have the tape. I cluck and tree call with an occasional cackle and some purrs thrown in when things get tough. I've had astounding success and magnanomous failures.
Sometimes I'm a genious, and sometimes I'm a smuck.
As far as a calling sequence. I usually have a bird roosted or at least know one's in the area. Before it get's light enough to see I'll give out a couple weak wimpy tree calls. If I get a response he's close enough. If not I'll do it a little louder about 5 min. later. If I get a response I try to determine if I need to move or I'm close enough. If I have to move I do it quick and quiet before it gets fly down light. Then I set up and shut up until right about fly down light. Sometimes I screw up and jump the gun on daylight andend up having to string one along once in a while. When flydowndaylight is closeI start again. Tree call and listen. If I get a gobbler hot I hit him again and usually shut up until he hits the ground. If he shuts up and hasn't flown down I'll give him a fly down cackle, some clucks and shut up. From then on it all depends on the bird. If he's a loud mouth and holding tight, I hit him when he talks. If he's quiet, I give him some soft stuff and shut up a lot. He has to move for me to know what to do.
