It's all about the horns. Don't let anybody fool you. Of course you don't eat the horns, horns are for tools, weapons, decorations, knife handles, buttons and such. Do you eat the laddle that you've stirred your soup with? Of course not! Why do people say, "you can't eat the horns"? NO SH'T! Your supposed to eat the meat! BTW, you can tenderize the meat with an antler, then lick it clean if you want to. You don't eat it, it's a tool.
I used to shoot little bucks. That was before I learned how to hunt big bucks. Big bucks = more horn and more meat. It also means more hunting, man, I hate that. I will agree that sometimes it is nice to shoot some little bucks, like fork horns, these horns are perfect to use as..forks! You know, table ware.
Yeah, it's all about the horns. I put a tape to every one of them, even button bucks. You know why they call them button bucks don't you? Because that's where buttons come from! They look real schnazzy on your shirts and maybe even your troussers!
Take this buck, I hunted long and hard because I needed some knife handle material. At first I thought, maybe he's not big enough, but then I realized...gun season was just around the corner and I could shoot another one just like him. Then I'd be allright. I got a lot of knife handle material off of him and a ton of meat. It's all about the horns!!

This is it in a nutshell!!!! Most people that argue against letting little ones go, don't have the time or patience to learn how to hunt a big one. Everybody thinks that there is an easy way to get big ones. No such luck. It takes TIME, ENERGY AND PATIENCE. Some people are unable or unwilling to make that kind of investment. IT IS YOU THAT MAKES THE CHOICE.

I can tell you for a fact that there are always going to be big deer everywhere in the country. Most the people that talk about letting the young ones grow are the ones that are not expirienced enough to hunt for the mature deer. They do not get that big for showing themselves all the time. There is probably a big deer in the area you hunt, you just need to find them.
A guy just needs to learn where and how to hunt them without scaring them off.

I think you do not have the dedication to get to 40. It takes time and a lot of BS.
You are one of those small posters!! Always looking for the easy read. You have to let a few post go before you stop! If not then you will be reading small post your whole life. [8D]

I cannot believe that I actually read every post! LOL, I just spent more time on this one thread than I have spent in the past month on this site total! Good stuff though guys...although I just wasted about 2hrs
Germ and Greg....my hats off to you guys. You have great spots and have done very well to take the best bucks on your spots. I know it's not easy to do that.
I can agree with some of what Atlas has said as well. You can't kill what isn't there. Yes, there are probably a couple mature bucks where he hunts, but the odds of even a great hunter getting one with a bow is probably slim.
I am somewhere in between the two camps. I hunt private land in areas that have plenty of deer, butnot many big bucks. A trophy buck in our area is about 110", and there are not many of those at all. I've killed LOTS of smaller bucks through the years, and gave that up about 10yrs ago....by choice. It just didn't do anything for me anymore, so I just shoot a doe instead. I hold out for a goodbuck every season but usually don't get a shot at one...heck I rarely see one.I can't tell you how many small bucks I have passed....most 2.5 and under. I haven't shot a buck with my bow for 10yrs....because I haven't seen one I wanted to shoot. Personally I just don't see the sense in shooting a 75" 6pt or 8pt just to say I got one. Do I put down other hunters for doing so? No way...you want it, go for it. However, I will say....the majority of hunters that never change their mindset to some degree....will most likely never have a chance at a good buck for their area, becuase they always shoot the first one by. If I hunted a place like Atlas, I'm suremy standards would be different. Based on what I have heard about where he hunts....I would probablynot be able to handle hunting those spots. I would have to search out some new spots with less pressure. Not so much because of the pressure on the deer, but I just can't handle hunters all over me. Same thing if I hunted a place like Germ or Greg....my standards would be much different there as well. I could only dream about a place like that. Germ you have take more P&Y bucks than the 2 counties that I hunt in combined!(That have been put into the record books to date)...LOL, that is pretty pathetic really. It really makes me puke when I hear about guys passing 120-130" deer, because he wasn't very big. I'd give my leftnut to get a shot at a deer like that EVER. But as it is....I have to deal with what I have, as we all do. I shoot does each year, and hope for a good one to get into range. (I do agree with Germ....we should all do our part in regards to shooting does. I wish they would make the areas I hunt "earn a buck" areas. That would help big time).
It's all relative though....in my case I pass up numerous bucks each season...some small, some medium....which is probably no differentthan someone elsepassing a 125" buck in the land of the giants. I will admit...I have not done as much scouting and work as is needed to consistently harvest the best deer in my areas either, but no complaints. I know some are here...they are just tough to find. I will get to that. My goal is to eventually have enough time that I can do that.
Germ, great deer this year btw...congrats.
Talondale, good post earlier also.
I've actually stumbled onto a new passion....my son turned 9 a couple weeks ago, and last week he got hisfirst deer ever (a big doe)....and I was more excited about that than anything in a long time. I can't wait to get him out bowhunting...probably next year if it works out. It was a great experience for him and me. I remember when there was a time that ANY deer to me was a trophy....it wascool to relive that a little through him. Good luck guys!

Here is where you guys always crash and burn..........you just can't hunt your own way without insulting others who don't do the same. What a stupid thing to imply about another hunter that you don't have the first clue about what makes him tick.........what a joke.
Another huge joke.............the foundation of QDM is to make it easier to get big ones. That's all you have to do is increase their numbers and they will fall to hunters of all calibers. You can see examples of women who have never hunted before and business men who don't know realtree from a real tree........and they have MONSTERS on the wall that they paid to get to hunt (and I don't mean pens.........just nice no pressure honey hole land in a great deer state.) There is a picture of a teenage girl on this site right now with a deer bigger then anything most of us will ever see.
Again you can't see the forest through the trees. Your in the middle of over 1,000 acres of prime land with 5 guys hunting it. There have been times when I will pass more guys then that just trying to find a spot to sit down............and this is on 100 acre plot. Every place is not the same. It takes TIME, ENERGY, AND PATIENCE for me to accomplish what I do as well..........even though the antlers on my deer won't make some stupid book. I hunt HARD. I have killed 15 deer in the last 4 years......8 with a bow(and I still have 2 tags left). I can PROMISE you that is far and away above the norm around where I live. I know guys that have hunted for 15 years and have 1 or 2 deer with the bow. They just don't grow on trees around here and you have to work your butt off to have success............that's right, I had to work my butt off to kill three 6 pt and one spike 1 1/2 year old deer in those years. That may be hard for you to believe in your situation but it's true. I go days at a time without even seeing a deer. My brother has seen 1 doe all year this year and he has only killed one deer in the last 4 years (he hunts like most "normal guys"......weekends etc.......definately not hardcore). You have to work your butt off around where I get to hunt to have success too.........you are not the only guy in the world who knows how to hunt. I have no doubts in my mind that if I lived in Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, Illinois etc I would have walls full of huge bucks by now because that is what is out there to shoot. As it is I am MORE then happy having the kind of success I enjoy year after year in my own challenging deer woods.
I don't judge the challenge of killing a deer by what is on it's head.........because there are spots you could sit for one day and see 4 big bucks walk by and there are spots you could sit for a week before you got a look at a spiker.
It's all relative.
Again with the implication that you are somehow going above and beyond what other lesser men can only dream of
You are doing the same thing that everyone else is.........the only difference is you have bigger bucks roaming around to shoot at.
Again, you are wrong. There is no choice where I hunt. I can say without a doubt that if I went out "trophy" hunting where my options are I would not fill a tag for many, many years........possibly never. I would have no bow kills, and only 1 gun kill. I'm sorry but taking one deer in 19 years of hunting is not my idea of fun.
Would you "trophy" hunt if you knew you would only fill 1 tag every couple decades??
Wake up.

Atlas, do you honestly have to turn every thread into a damn pissing contest?
You notice the thread took a turn towards the argumentative side once you started posting?
Its getting old.
