Deer Under Stand at Dark Won't Leave!
#11
I used to carry several rocks in my pocket. Now, I told my wife if I'm not in the house 20 min. after dark come out and walk the dog along the edge of the woods. This works the best but I know everyone dosn't have that luxery.

Funny this should come up. Had two does and 4 fawns under me last night when daylight ran out, eating and not in a hurry to go anywhere. I stayed put until darkness made it impossible to see them. I grunted like a mature buck and heard them walk off. When I figured they were gone, I shined the area with the flashlight, 2 sets of eyes still left about 40 yards away. They I grunted again and they walked off, not spooked in the least.
I'll hit that stand again in a few days, hopefully the bucks will visit instead of the does and pups.

I hunt on my parent's land. Last week, I thought there might be a deer nearby, so I called my father on the cell phone and asked him to drive his ATV down to my blind. He did and spooked a doe about 50 yards away from me.

This happens to me quite often. Usually I'll owl hoot until they finally leave. This doesn't always work though. I had a 3 point under me one evening and was ready to go. After five minutes of throwing tree bark at him he finally walked off. Sometimes you just have to spook them, unless your prepared to stay in the tree for a while. You probably won't have this problem unless you are hunting over corn, acorns, or a small food plot. If you can make the sound of a deer blowing this will work. I have done this and it has worked.

In my opinion if you are going to try and spook them a way, like throwing things, making goofy noises, yelling or hitting them with a seat cushion you might as well just climb down and walk past them. The way I look at it spooked is spooked.
I have a doe that comes in my yard pretty much every evening and morning. We go out and take pictures of it and look at it. If we get too close it stomps the ground and runs a way. It comes right back the next or day after.
My girlfriend says they stand in the empy lot next to us and watch her smoke at night.
My hunting partner said he has had this happen to him severaly times: After shooting a deer with his bow and field dressing it he will have several deer walk up within 20-40 yards and watch him.
I have shot a deer with my inline muzzle loader at 80 yards before from a blind. I put a small coffee can of corn on the ground when I hunt to stop them. After I shot one deer and was waiting to get down and go get it another came up and starting eating the rest of the corn. Corn covered with blood from the other deer I might add. That happened to be laying dead not 40 yards away!
I don't think deer are very smart, paranoid yes, smart not so much
. I would love to see a study on their intelegence and memory span.

Update on this...I went back to the same stand area that I got caught in Sunday night. I set up about 40 yards from that tree and a doe and 2 fawns were feeding heavily under the tree I set up in the day before. I want to say they were probably some of the deer that made me stay late the night before. My noises that nightdidn't 'spook' them, just had them move along.
AND, to top it off I took a large healthy doe last nightthat had no fawns in tote!!

In some spots spooking deer is a problem so I will lower my bow down and make noise on the ground with it. In some areas it doesn't matter. Deer are always coming and going. Infact during one morning hunt I had to get down and go to work to make a meeting. I had two groups of 6 does and fawns beneath me 10 yards from the tree. I lowered my bow, slide down the tree, packed up my stand, and took off my hunting clothes to be ready to go into the office. Those deer never moved. The watched me the whole time from 10 yards away and I just walked off.

The best way I've found that doesn't spook them but they will wander away is to shine a flashlight on them. Flip it on and off to catch their attention. Then wave it back and forth. They don't run but do tend to move on away. If that didn't work I'd drop my pack or something to make a big thud.
