I was wondering if any of you older guys have had to deal with this or not. It seems that I can't do anything anymore without pulling a muscle or waking up sore. I used to pull 70 lbs. without a problem. Then the last few years I've started creeping down. Now I am thinking of just going ahead and getting a 50-60 lb. bow. I just don't see the need to keep up the macho image anymore, it's too painful. Has anyone had any problems with passthroughs at lower poundages?

You won't remember doing it after sleeping and you can then lie about it with a straight face. Macho still intact and saves money on aspirins.
Technicaly it may not even be lieing if you make sure not to remember it.
Of course this is all just a theory. Let me know if it works out for ya so I'll know whether to try it when I get old.

But to answer the question is now I am more cautious in the activeity I do such as climbing a stand covered in ice/snow. My back hurts me some at times but I really don't have any elments (sp)? that will keep me from hikeing over the next ridge. You just better try to keep up with me.

I'm 49 and have no ACL in my right knee, I've had back surgery, shoulder pain, elbow pain and you name it. But when that buck comes in front of my stand, I don't even remember drawing my 64 lb. bow! Kinda funny.

I'm 53, so I qualify I guess (at least according to my kids). All I have to say is that there is no whining in bowhunting. I work out regularly so I that I won't have pulled muscle issues when I pull a #70 bow. If you don't want to stay in shape, then go to a lower weight bow. I still wake up sore sometimes, but that is just part of getting older. You just have to get over it.

My brother and I shared our first bow...a 45lb Bear recurve...This was in the late 60's...we had 3 arrows and 2 Bear razorheads...and we killed deer and had passthroughs, no problem...
I can still remember the first time I pulled back on a compound bow...it was 1974, I was in college...the bow was a Bear Whitetail...I was amazed with the letoff...bought the bow, set the poundage at 55lbs, used the old Satellite broadheads with the thin razerblade heads...killed a ton of deer with...passthroughs were no problem...I used that bow well into the '90s...I did upgrade to Thunderheads...Only remember loosing one deer with it...Never shot over 25 yards and most were killed between 12-18 yards...
The big advantage to higher poundage is flatter trajectory and more energy in case you make a bad shot....The big advantage to getting older is you have learned to pass on risky shots and have the experience it takes to be setup properly for those high percentage shots.

I'm 47 and I pull 60lbs on my bow. I had some shoulder problems last yearso Ibought a bow maxed out to 60. I actually am thinking of my next bow maxing at 70 for hunting and cranking it down for practice. But 60 will kill a deer fine. You may not get as many pass-throughs but to me that is irrelevant.

I don't consider myself old, I am just a baby, I'm 678 months old. When I started getting sore, I started warming up first, just some stretches for about 3 minutes before shooting and now I am fine..

I'm 47 yo and had 3 shoulder operations and can use another. Do what you can. It's very important to workout, maybe not as hard as you used to but anything is better than nothing. I keep injuring myself because I push myself too hard in my workouts and keep ruining my shoulder.Hopefully I'll know my limitations!
