I am an archery enthusiast. I love to shoot my bowtech and shoot it often. I practice every concievable shot that I can come up with (through trees, sitting squating, etc). I have several targets that I set up from any distance, I even have one set occasionally at 100yards. Wewent to a shoot that has a 100 yard money shot, so I decided I better practice it (the next shoot we went to I was dead on, however I hit about 10 inches low and I told the guy that the shot wasn't exactly 100 yrds and he said it was really 105). I killed my best buck at 52 yards and put a perfect heart shot on him. However I prefer my shots to be inside 40 yards.

Nothing over 200 yds that's for sure. I'm very comfrotable from 125 to 150 range if the wind is not above 30 mph. If the wind exceeds 30 mph I won't take a shot over 75 yds. I feel there is no since in taking a risky shot. I learned this one fall morning when the winds were a steady 40 mph. I caught movement across the field of a 190 class buck making his way along a wooded edge. I calculated the wind and shot distance, 40 mph wind 100yds. The numbers flashed thru my head and I knew I had to aim 47 yds behind him and thirty three feet above him give or take an inch. I let the arrow fly anticipating a clean heart shot, well as you would imagine I hit a little further back and took out both lungs. From that day onI promised myself, no more risky shots.

I practice out to 50 yards, but won't take a shot at over 45. My groups are fairly good at 45 yards, but probably wouldn't take a shot even that far unless the conditions were perfect. I voted 45 yards, but in reality, I'd prefer shots to be within the 30 yard mark.

I've practiced enough at 40 to take a 40 yard shot, if the conditions were right. Usually, the deer make that decision for me, they either never get within 40 or they keep moving towards my stand and it ends up being a 20-30 yard shot.

Practice out to 70 yards. I limit bow shots at deer to 40 yards -- and THEN everything has to be dead perfect for me to loose the arrow.

Wow! I'm really suprised at how many people would shoot beyond 30 yards at a deer under actual hunting conditions. Maybe this is why there are so many "Hit him but couldn't find him" posts on this forum. Yes, when I practice in the back yard under perfect conditions I too can hit my mark at 40 or even 50 yards. But for me, I won't shoot unless I knowthat I willhit within an inch or two of the particular hair that I am aiming at every time. For me that's usually 30 yards but I'd really prefer 20 to 25. I think too many guys take shots they can make instead of shots they know they will make. Yes, maybe I could make a doulbe lung shot on a deer at 45 yards3 times out of 5 but the other 2 would be wounded animals. Maybe I've been "lucky" but I've recovered every deer I ever shot with a bow so far and I think it's because I'm real picky about taking shots I know I can make even if it means going an entire season without takinga shot like last year.
