Although I practice out to 50 and 60 yds, 40 is as far as I would go. Its not that Im not confident, its just that its a low percentage shot which might result in the wounding of a nice buck.

Naturally, it varies with the unique conditions of each opportunity, depending on whether or not I feel likeI'vegot the mojo at the moment,on the weather conditions and on how alert the animal is. Long ago, though, I decided if I wanted totake any hunting shotbeyond 30 yards thenI might as well be using a rifle. So I settled on 30 yards as my maximum shooting distance.
Hunting with a bow, for me, is all about getting close.

You didn't really ask what game.
Longbow:
Deer: 20 yards
Elk: 30 yards
Moose 30-35 yards
Compound (not that I use it much anymore):
Deer: 30 yards
Elk and Moose: 40 yards

40yds for me as well, give or take a few yards depending on many factors, deer position, wind, time of day, etc.... I try not to even put myself into a situation where a longer shot is available. This yearmost of my stands don't have any lanes past 30yds.
