Judging a buck from a distance looks pretty hard (i know i haven't done it)and it looks like a rather fresh buck to me. Regarding the Rigor Mortis, Rigor Mortis is at maximum after 24 to 48 hours, then due to bacteria, the lactose in the musscle is degraded and the RM disappears. The eyes are not clouded, wich is a strange thing, because eye clouding is one of the first effects that follow death. It should also be bloated due to the fermentation of bacteria in the stomach with some expulsion of stomach content.
It doens't look like a buck that has been dead for 5 days.
BUT it could be the same buck that was hit , say in the bowel area, or a spleen shot.A pierced bowel spills it's fecal content into the bowel cavity and although bleeding could be limited it could cause the onset of shock. Or the spleen could be damaged and caused the deer to become paralysed due to bleeding around his spleen.
This could lead to death byMultiple Organ Failure or septimic shock.
If deer are like people it is possible that the deer was wounded, that it bedded, and passed away after 4/5 days due to the effects of bloodloss.
So i think we should give the poster the benefit of the doubt. It could be the same deer, but it only passed away just ( a few hours)before found or was given a "coup de grace".
The span was a guestimation and people have the tendency to get tunnelvision while shooting under stress.
The real span can only be measured when harvested.
If true a sad story. The deer got hurt, slowly bled to death and it's precious meat was lost. They do have a nice rack now, but it doesn't take away the fact that this was a inhumane shot.
just my 2 cents

This guy is probaly sitting back laughing because he got things so stirred up. Some people do that for fun.
I'd ignore him and this post... It's all a big joke just to drum up some laughs.

Yeah....We had one die on us like that, one time.
We were raising hydrilla...down by the reservoir....and my buddy says "come over here". I dropped the fresh turkey I was cleaning (hell it was July and hot, anyways)....and went over to where he was. He had his .22 rifle out....and was shooting at this buck that was swimming across the lake. We couldn't tell if he was hitting it....or if the buck was just dodging the shots that were ricocheting around him.
Well.....we saw him get out of the water....and head for the thicket. It was close to dark.....so we went in and got the spotlight and the assault rifle. When we spotlighted the thicket.....we couldn't tell which deer he was....so we shot 'em all. It was more fun than catching spring trout and throwing 'em back out there and re-catching 'em.
That venison was good with the spotted owl soup.
