If it turns cold the bucks will go in to rut.Hey it is the homone clock and time of the year not the weather man. If this is true ,then the bucks in South Texas would never go in to rut.Heck I hunted down there in 90 dergree temps and the bucks were running does like crazy.

Old Wives Tales... well OK.. my wife's tail is so OLD...

How old is it???

Nah.. I better not go there.

OK, the tail thing. People believe a flag up and you missed or not fatal hit and all that... NOT always true.

deer don't move much when it's hot. The most deer movement I've seen all season was last Saturday and it was 90 degrees.

forget the wind, just hunt. puh-lease!

How about "Deer don't look up".

LOL...I swear, maybe it's just me, but it seems like all the places I hunt....they walk along looking around and up almost always. I got picked out last weekend by a doe that had no idea I was there, I didn't move, the wind was in my favor and I was 20 feet up in a tree with plenty of cover...that I had never been in before. She stopped, looked around, and then up into the trees...scanning the area. When she got to me...she locked on me, freaked out a little, and ran about 20 yds and stopped and looked back. Then went on feeding...LOL...

I'm sure any of you who have hunted a while have seen this happen. It seems like it's only gotten worse over the years...like it's bred into them now. 15 years ago, it didn't seem to happen very often.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
Why ain't I seein' any deer?"
"'Cause they done went nocturnal!"

So you don't think deer go nocturnal????????????

quote:
"Dont look a deer in the eyes , you'll spook em"

That also is true. I don't know if they see the movement of your eyeballs or what but I know that to be a fact. I have found out the hard way on several different occaisions. On know scent didn't have anything to do with it. Deer that scent a human normally don't stick around for a 5 minute stare down.

quote:
Or "its got to be a buck track because its splayed" (also usually false - sure heavier deer tend to leave splayed prints, but all deer can and do when running or turning sharply)

You can tell though if a deer is turning or running. I have gotten down and went and looked at the tracks after deer come through on several occaisions and I have never found an exception to the "if it's a spayed track it's a buck, if not it's a doe" rule.

Protect your hunting rights, "Spay or neuter a liberal."

Dont piss or take a dump near your stand .I dont think it makes any diferance .Last year my buddy got down to take a dump when he was through he went to climb back up and there was a deer at 20 yards he got him . I also took a piss in a scrape and the next morning shot a nice 7 point , so forget those bottels and trying to hold it piss off of your stand it will not make a diferance, now sweat is something else just get slightly sweaty and watch them run and blow . Does love to stomp and blow.

How about "you better cut off the tarsal gland asap or all of the meat on the deer will spoil".

I do think deer...especially older bucks, will go almost completely 100% nocturnal if pressured too much.

I do not believe you can tell the sex of a deer by the clumping or non-clumping of it's feces. I think for the most part the big log-type terds are from bucks but I think bucks can let the pebbles fall out of their arse one by one also. I think it mostly depends on diet.

I looked an 8 point buck in the eyes for over 30 minutes on Sunday morning at distances of 5 yards out to 20 yards. He used every sense possible to figure out what I was...he smelled me, stared at me, listened to me, and everything but climb up the stand and lick me to see what I tasted like. I just continued to stare at him. He eventually began feeding again until he meandered out of sight. I don't think I would have had the same luck had he been a mature buck...at the first wiff of me he would have been gone, but young bucks are young, dumb, and inexperienced.

When the wind is out of the west, deer move best. When the wind is out of the east the deer move the least. Not totally false in my experiences(ie. usually much cooler with west winds).

Deer can see the white of your eyes... C'mon, you've got to be kidding me here.

Weather does not determine the rut, true, however weather plays a HUGE role in deer movement during the rut, especially in the southern states, where temps can range from 0-90 during the winter.

My Grandma use to say if the cows are feeding at night, it means a weather change in 3 days. Well duh, weather changes about every three days anyway !!

She also use to believe that hot water freezes faster.

You gotta love the deer smell human pee tale. Last year, I peed out of my stand in gun season and had a 6 point come by and stand 30 yards from me. This year on opening morning I peed out of my stand and shot a doe an hour later. It makes no difference. If I gotta go number 2 I will go a little away from my stand. Not because the deer might smell it, but because I don't want to smell it.
