Default opinions on a hunting ethics issue???

First of all, hello everyone I'm new to the site. I'm from upstate NY and a rookie bowhunter.
Sorry if this is a bit longwinded, but here's the situation. I own a golf course in NY. I have gun hunted for a # of years now. I have a few different pieces of land to hunt including the golf course. However, this year I decided to ask the farmer that borders the golf course if I could hunt his land. He was very friendly and has absolutely no problem with me hunting it. He took me around the 176 acre area to show me the boundries. I noticed the posted signs didn't have his name on them so I asked him about it. He said that one of the guys in the area post the land, but doesn't own it. Apparantly this guy has half the county posted without owning any of it. So after getting the name and phone #, I decided to look into it further to see what's going on. I wanted to see who hunts where and when. Very politely I said to him on the phone that we received permission to hunt the piece of land and myself and one more person were thinking of putting up some stands and hunting the area. As you may imagine..... it didn't go over too well. He had the attitude that because he has it posted, I shouldn't hunt it (even though I have permission from the landowner). I told him of about 10 different spots over 176 acres that we were thinking of hunting. Everyplace I mentioned, he says he usually hunts there. I'm not the kinda guy to step on anyones toes or be a jerk about things, but in my mind I have as much right to hunt the land as he does (or do I?). I offered to meet him out on the land to see if we can make some arrangements where we can all hunt the land with no problems, he hasn't called me back to do that yet. I think I've done everything I can do to resolve the situation. Maybe I'm wrong?? Should I just go to a different location?? The thing is, there's only going to be 3 people that bowhunt the property. Seems like 176 acres can comfortably accomodate us. Maybe he's worried about us taking deer during bow and having that many less deer for the rest of his hunting party (4 total) during gun season?? I don't plan on being anyplace near there during gun!! I dunno.......any thoughts?

I dont know why people feel the need to be like that. You have permission from the land owner, get in there and hunt. Doesn't sound like this is a ethics issue, maybe a hunting etiquette issue and its obvious that is guy needs some lessons. You have made every effort to work with this guy, it's his loss. Get in there and shoot the big ones before gun season opens. Then send him the pictures

I AGREE WITH ANTHONY HUNTER. YOU HAVE DONE YOUR PART. I THINK THE RESPONSIBILITY ISW IN THE OTHER PERSONS COURT. GO IN AND HUNT YOUR AZZ OFF. YOU HAVE PERMISSION.

ONE THING TO THINK ABOUT IS THAT IF THERE IS A DIFFERENCE OF OPINION THEN THE OTHER PARTY COULD RUIN YOUR HUNTS BY VISITING YOU AT PRIME TIME, HECK I HAVE HERD OF PEOPLE TURNING UP THERE CAR STEROS UP TO SCARE DEER AWAY. YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT THESE ISSUES. AMMICABLE SOLUTIONS ARE ALWAYS THE BEST. IF NOT POSSIBLE THEN THE HECK WITH THEM

HUNT ON HUNT HARD AND EAT WELL

titlest

I went through a VERY simular situation last year. Ill make this short...A friend of mine had permission to hunt a nice track of land in Illinois close to home from the landowner. So we went in to set up a stand he was hunting I was shooting film (we had a decoy) we get set up and hunt first night..... next day we return to same spot, get into stands... Now let me mention the tree we were in had a stand chained to it.... (we asked the landowner about it he said NO ONE had permission to be there at all - asked him this night before after we found it).... OK... so we are waitin on the local deer to arrive when we hear some noise... only to see this guy walking up[ to us and starts screamin to get out of 'his tree' we try to talk, but it gets a little heated..... anyway he tells us hes a police officer which pissed me off, we ask him if he has permission, and say we have WRITTEN permission and show it to him.... anyway we leave....
We learned who he was, reported him to wildlife officials, he was cited....

So - been there... I say STEP ON THE TOES.... If you tried to talk to him and he wants to be an azz, he doesnt deserve your concern for him.... I know we all want to 'protect' our little honey holes these days but as things get more crowded we have to learn to be sportsman and remember we are not the only ones in the woods - period.

If the landowner gave you permission, then HUNT!
forget this whazoo on some kind of power trip... Posting no hunting signs on someone else's property?
Don't bother telling him where you're going to be. He is NOT the owner. Do I need YOUR permission to go into my neighbors' yard? no...
I'd suggest you get written permission from the landowner, and then forget about the other guy. There is NO ethics issue here. If he gets comfrontational, show him your written permission, and ask HIM for his...

I agree with the others this guy sounds like a real pain in the butt.
You have permission then go hunt it and get all the big ones.

titleist, it's not his land to post. You did the right thing and got permission. If he doesn't like it he should take it up with the landowner. He has no right to post land that isn't his. Good luck and I hope you pull a big one off that property.

I agree with the others, you have permission so go ahead and hunt. Use a climbing stand so he cant steal your stands. A similar situation happened to a buddy of mine a few years ago. This other guy caused such a stink that the land owner got pissed off and stopped letting both of them hunt on his property. Be careful that this does'nt happen to you.

Titleist: First off, welcome to the board and I hope that you find it as helpful, friendly, and informative as I have. Now, for your little issue (non-issue). You have taken all of the necessary and "ethical" measures to secure hunting rights on this piece of property and your neighbor/land-owner sounds like a good guy. The bozo who is taking the liberty to post property that isn't his, should not confuse the fact that he doesn't own or control the land. Now it is your turn to Inform him that you will be hunting there and if he wants to know where you'll be, he can call you. You may also want to suggest to the land-owner that you'll keep an eye on his property for him and suggest that anyone hunting should have written permission to avoid confusion moving forward.

Now, how do I get a spot for my stand on your course?
