Bringiton , you said " they were even down wind" , thats exactly why I dont agree with ONLY hunting the wind! If your only hunting the wind , your missing out on numerous opportunities. Most deer movement in my area seems to be cross wind. Eliminate your odor and use the wind to determine what direction they will be moving , not wether or not you should be hunting there.
I use scent-lok , wash all my clothes in scentless detergent , wash my body with scentless soap , use scentless deoderant , and make sure I spray my rubber boots , gloves and hat down with odor eliminator before hitting the woods. I keep my clothes in a rubbermaid tub after washing. I also brush my teeth with baking soda and water.
Concentrate on eliminating your odor , not covering it!

I hunt on property with cattle. I pass by the feeding area and step in some fresh cow poop. The one thing to remember is "never grab the ladder rungs with your hands."

i've never really worried about my scent to be honest...I air them out b4 each season and once in a while i might spray with scent away but it never had bothered the deer b4, my dad has the same results hes had deer come right to his stand and he washes them in regulaer deturgent, so i don't know what to think about scents and stuff so i'm just going to keep doin waht i'm doing.

This is a fun post! Kind of looks like tradionalists versus the gadgets getters! LOL I use the basic scent elimination products(laundry, shower soap, plastic bags, and spray). I have been on the ground and had a mature doe 20 yards away directly down wind and she did not wind me at all. She had no clue that I was there. Also, for those that believe a cover scent is all you need forget that mentality. I had a guy last night bust deer out from under my stand. He smelled like a gallon of coon urine. It took these deer awhile to figure him out, but finally the 2 mature doe went "nose straight up" and then they snorted and all the deer in that area(10 or 11) took off! My objective is to smell like nothing.

I do all the scent elimating things that everyone else does but one thing I am thinking of trying, we have a bunch of walnuts and hickory nuts around here so I thinking of getting some of each and some leaves dirt plants and putting them in a scent away bag with some sort of towel or other cloth over them and putting my clothes in that that way when I spray down with earth scent and keep myself scent free my clothes will smell like the woods I am in
just my thoughts
good luck and God bless

First I wash all of my clothes in a scent killer/UV Killer wash. Then I hang them in a tree and let them air dry for a day or two. The put them in a large clear plastic bag. Colored of black bags have their own scent to them. I keep all these bags in a large rubbermaid container in my truck and change after I get out of my truck. Once all my clothing is on I spray with Carbon Scent Blocker to get rid of other scent, and I will use various cover scents, depending on things present in the area I am hunting. None of this will help if you are not cautious about wind direction.

"If canines can smell pot and C-4 through plastic wrap, foil wraps and in a suit case... what makes anyone think a deer can't smell through shampoo." GREAT POINT shortdraw. Hunt with the wind and hope for GOOD LUCK!!!!

Great information here.I guess I am a cross of the traditionalist, and the more modern gadgeteer.I just purchased a Scent Blocker rain coat and bibs.I have yet to use it,but will this weekend.Being a beginning bowhunter I am learning and spending a lot!I have always used Scent Killer body spray, deoderant, and clothes wash.I will be adding shampoo soon.I usually hang my camo under the wood shed (tin roof, open sides) at night or when not in use.One thing that I always wonder about is wood smoke.Does it bother deer? Our cabin is all wood heat from a pot belly stove so smoke smell is unavoidable.I do know that I smell the chimney at times while hunting. Not sure if it spooks deer or not.Being deathly afraid of heights,I can only hunt about 10-12 feet up,although just yesterday I set a stand at 15 feet and will hunt it this weekend.I also have a carbon lined ground blind I intent to use at times.Just using simple methods of scent control I have had a black bear at 15 yards directly down wind while in a 12 foot ladder stand. It never seemed to notice me.One tip for the fellow who can't find the scent wafer at night, use a glow in the dark safety pin to hold it to the limb.Works for me!
