Taz, You really need to remove the plug & nipple after about 6 or 8 shots anyway to clean out the gunk stuck inside the plug. That's a good time to grease the threads on the plug. I use gorilla grease (the purple stuff) on mine.

Tazman,
I agree with using some type of special breech grease. Most are teflon impregnated and work wonders. I also use T/C's little tube of teflon nipple grease on my nipple threads as well. Also, make sure not to over tighten either the breech or the nipple. After a good cleaning, install & tighten until they stop moving & then stop turning - torqueing past this point does no good at all, and may lock things in place in such a way as to never get them removed again.
I've never had to remove the breech during a shooting session - even after firing over 30 rounds. I wait until I get home, then I pull the nipple & breech and submerse them in cleaner while I clean the barrel & oil the barrel. Then I brush the pieces well in the cleaner (make sure you have a small nylon brush or heavy pipe cleaner to clean up inside the breech hole), coat with the teflon grease, & install......job done.
Here's a hint - Walmart sells a $20 sonic jewelry cleaner that I use to soak the breach, nipple, & bolt in while I work the barrel. This softens things up pretty good, though the pieces will still need some brushing before installation.

I don't care if I shoot it once a day, it will get torn down and cleaned once a day if I do that. I always put breech plug greese on the breech plug and nipple threads each cleaning. I want my muzzleloader reliable, and also want to hunt with confidence knowing its not going to misfire from not cleaning it the way I do.

i use just white lithium grease . i have a pill bottle and put it in it and have it in my cleaning box that i keep in my truck. i keep it with me all season. along with bp solution(#13) and other items. i use a fishing tackle box for both my bp and another for modern gun cleaning. they work great.

Thanks for the tip on the white lithium grease. None of the gun shops in my area have any breech plug grease, even Wal-mart won't have any until July. Shipping costs just as much as a tube if you order it through the mail, so I am going to use your suggestion this weekend. I have some white lithium grease that is used for the bearing on my boat trailer, it should work fine.

irish,
If you have a Lowes or Home Depot close by, they also carry a teflon grease which is IDENTICAL to the T/C grease. It comes in a small silver tube.
Also, some automotive stores (AutoZone, Pepboys, etc) carry the same stuff.

Well after reading all this good advice I will be pulling the breech plug after every shooting session or 10 shots, which ever comes first. Thanks to all of you.
