I stayed up to 12 p.m. last night cleaning the gun this is what I found The GPR or hunter model seems the gun in factory completed and then sprayed with a walnut stain ,The stain was every where screws metal parts @ lock @ barrel. The metal to wood fit is good except for the steel butt center screw, that is not sitting in straight( a little off center). The gentleman who sold the gun did say it was new never shot, pick up from midsouth for $300.00 plus shipping ,gun total $312.00 .sold it for $225.00 with shipping
He did state he also has a 54cal. barrel 1 in 60 twist that he purchase as an extra barrel, that also was for sale.
My preference is shooting conical bullet when deer hunting that was the reason to choose the 50 cal.
What I also found was that when the hammer strikes the nipple the nipple center is not center of the Hammer I may have to call lyman about this @ see what they say.
The warranty card has never been filled out came with the gun that should help.

Lyman is a great rifle. Friends I know, two of them had .54 caliber GPR's one had the GPH. From talking to all of them, one said it came they took it out of the box, cleaned it, and it has been shooting perfect ever since. One had to heat the hammer and bend it a little (I never asked why but I think it had something to do with the way it struck the nipple) and one complained about having to re-set a couple of screws. But I do not think you could have gotten any of them to part with them. They sure could shoot with them rifles. I shot them and they really were a nice rifle. Well balanced and they held so nice in the shoulder. I have always thought of getting one and someday I will. I think I will get the kit and put a .54 caliber together. Good luck with your rifle. All that stuff sounds kind of minor and should not be too hard to fix......

Underclocked yep must of beat you to it Gun is sharp and for the price I did not go wrong.
I was interested in a barrel (percussion) for my t/c flinter and a lock(percussion) Would of cost me $200.00 that way if I took that route. Now I have the whole gun and still have my t/c flinter. The only thing he has left is a new barrel in 54 cal. 1 60 twist ,but I perfer to shoot a conical over a round ball ,that my preference

I will check with him and see what he says about the hammer fix (I read in one post that you can heat them and twist them a little although being new, I think like you I would get the company to do it) .. and as far as the nipple I would get myself an Uncle Mike Hot Shot Nipple right away and put thats on. I heard the threads are kind of strange size on them and that the CVA and Traditions will not fit them. But I am sure they are out there on line.
You have a excellent rifle there. If that thing shoots 1/2 as well as my friends rifles shoot, you will be pleased. I have one friend with the GPR that stood in my yard and with out the aid of any rest, knock plastic soda bottles off my target stand from all angles and distances without even breaking a sweat. Needless to say I had my shooting sticks. It might not sound like a hard thing to do, but free standing most of us seldom shoot like that.

lonewolf.
I bought a 50 cal. Lyman Great Plain Hunter a few weeks back from Midsouth. When It arrived the barrel was coated with some sort of sticky film. A protectant I assume. It cleaned up nicely though. I spent a few days sighting it in and I have it putting them in a two inch circle at 50 yards. With 245 gr powerbelts and 75 grs of pyrodex. I posted earlier about the sighting in prosses. I bought a CVA powder flask thinking it had a 20 gr spout. Later I discovered it is a 15 grain spout. I thought I was loading 100 grains of powder when I was really shooting 75 grs. For those folks following my earlier posts I did get the Gun sighted in but failed to get into the woods and do any hunting. But I will be sure to take it afield next fall. I am not disapointed at all with my gun the fit and finish is excellent.

Jerry the gun seem coated with a stain finish, the more I clean it the more brown stuff just kept comming. The gun is clean now and can't waite to shoot it.I am going to try the R.E.AL. conical 320 grains @ yes it the same model(HUNTER BARREL)
Jerry how did you like the sight picture using the stock sights.I may have to change them, these eyes are not what they use to be.I also had to grind the nipple down a little ,it seem the nipple taper was to long and the no#11 caps would fall off.I just ordered a gun sock for the gun if you are interested let me know I have one for my flinter t/c hawken helps getting scratch.

yes all lyman rifles are made by Investarms and the 1 in 32 twist should print some nice groups with a conical or sabot bullet. The guy also had a 1in 60 twist barrel for the same gun in 54cal,but I do like to shoot a conical over a round ball.
Funny how thing work out my first choice on a side lock was a lyman trade rifle 1 in 48 twist and about 1 lbs lighter then the GPR ,but I was not crazy about the barrel twist that lyman offers in the trade rifle.
I would lean more to the trade rifle over the GPR if that rifle had the same twist as the hunter model.
I may get out and shoot the rifle next week weatherman says temp. will reach 50 degrees
