LOL Duh, I forgot you where here in IL where I am. Yes saboted is legal. bullet has to be minimum .44 caliber and of an expanding design. Powder substitute is legal as well as smokeless as long as the weapon is designed for it. 1878Sharpshooter and Blackpowdersmoke are your 2 best bets for Bullet information for a .54cal smokepole. Cayugad and a couple others as well. As you have read, powerbelts wouldn't be a common recommendation from most any of us. (to put it mildly
) I'll look up the common twist rate of that rifle and put it on here for them to be able to help you further.

Here is what i know: sqezer sent me 5 of these bullets in the mail. They all weighed about the same--about 252g. Never did shoot them before; never did look at them in the store, never did purchase them. If you read the OP, then you probably know more about this bullet than i do.

They are popular Cj because of 3 things: 1) Very easy to load up. 2) They are accurate as can be out of dang near any muzzleloader I will give them that comeupins. 3) They have a dang near UNMATCHED marketing campaign behind them. No matter HOW many negative feedbacks are reported (and I have seen hundreds) people still seem to want them.

The 250g XTP test did some better than this PB bullet in the same test, and completely penetrated 3 jugs after going through the carpet, and plywood.
The 300g XTP did better, and went completely through 4 jugs after the carpet, and plywood in the same test.

"348 grain(I think) Powerbelt Aerotips and some pyrodex pellets. He's killed a bunch of deer with no issues that I know of."
Sounds like the bullet he's using is working great. Will it stop working because you guys say it won't?
This thread has become ridiculous.

Yep, .54cal I don't see the point of using saboted anyway. You are taking away the advantages of that big bore. Full bore connies would be my bet. Great Plains 425 grain would probably be about the best thing he could stuff down it's throat. Maybe 100 grain pyro or T7 out to 100 yards and he would have a bang flop on one of our big ole deer around here!
