Powder substitute is legal as well as smokeless as long as the weapon is designed for it. 1878Sharpshooter and Blackpowdersmoke are your 2 best bets for Bullet information for a .54cal smokepole. Cayugad and a couple others as well. As you have read, powerbelts wouldn't be a common recommendation from most any of us. (to put it mildly

Yeah, I noticed they weren't too popular on here. I'm just surprised, because I see the powerbelts for sale everywhere they have muzzleloader supplies. I had thought about using some Hornady XTPs, but I was looking for a quick solution at the time, so he could go hunting with it the next weekend.
