HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!
While it is possible to go higher, for normal use and deer size animals accuracy is the important thing; my first thought is all ways "if you can not hit it where you need to then its worthless any way" Lee

I had the kind of luck with 777 as you did with BH, I am sure there are some other things than the powder that causes these kind of problems, I worked a bit with 777 trying to find out what it was that caused it and came to the conclusion that it was a chemical reaction to something I was using. Since they came out with BH and it solved all those problems for me I never followed through on it.
have you tried the new Black Mag XP? I want to get some but have not been able to yet. If what I have heard and the advertising is correct it should work well even in the flint locks. Black Powder is very difficult for me to obtain here. Lee

I am actively looking for some. When I heard that they were looking at making a version that would work as pan powder in a FL and that it was supposed to be almost as potent as BH it sounded like the ideal powder for my traditional rifles and pistol. Lee
