Sorry Bronko22000,
I just took the rifle out to looked it over and it looks great. No rust anywhere. I think I'll keep it. I am determined to kill a deer with it.
If I was to shoot a Powerbelt in it. What grain bullet would you guys suggest? What about the new powerbelt Platinums?

Yep.. I normally purchase 20 tins at a time so the hazmat fee is not so bad. And that lasts me two years normally. And I have never had them go bad. Get a good quality cap, keep them dry, and they last for ever.

stay away from the MAXI-HUNTERS.
use the powerbelts.
hollow ones.
i like the 295 gr but some say the 348 is better.
i use 80 grs of 2f.
remember, you dont have to push a PB hard to make it open,THATS NICE THING ABOUT A POWERBELT.
less powder means better shooting, less noise, less flinching.
for deer in the hawkins flintlock, there is only 1 bullet i use, its POWERBELT ,hollow ones.

The standard 50 cal maxiballs weigh 370, but there are other weithts. My brother used to shoot the 460 gr maxiballs. They were awesome on deer. The maxihunters also come in several weights, but generally weighless than maxiballs.
Maxihunters never shot well for me. Tried about 10, and recast the other 10 into maxiballs. The front or top band on these bullets, that is supposed to engrave into the rifling, is much smaller than the top band on the maxiballs. Maxihunters may even be a bit smaller diameter, seemed that way to me at least.
I have never seen a T/C Hawken or Renegade that wouldNOT shoot a maxiball over 80 - 100 gr powder very well.

that was bullet that was used in that gun fron day one.
now, the MAXI-HUNTERS are too short even tho they are 370 grs.
stay away from them.
but if you have a MAXI-BALL which is 370 gr. it is LONGER and will shoot GREAT.
reason why the bullets dont shoot well in a 1-48 twist is because they need to be LONGER.
this is why a 348 powerbelt is just about right length of a 370 MAXI-BALL.
i use the 295 gr but the 348 is one that should shoot the best on the 1-48 twist.
