On cayugad's advise, Ifired a 50g pellet and cleaning patch to foul the barrel. I must say the guys on the bench next to me thought I was nuts. Anyway, would this technique work with loose or do I need to keep some pellets nearby for the fouling shot?

My son'sOptima likes the 250 Shockwaves pretty well. They load with with moderate pressure and don't kik too hard for him on lower powder levels. It does well with anywhere from 80gr to 100gr of Pyro P. Typical groups with me shooting are under 2" at 100 yards, with him (13) groups are under 2" at 50 to 75 yards.Weare still working on his shooting form and he needs more practice with his ML'er but he shoots 22 a lot and does well with that. He has no problemhitting 80% of clay pigeons at 50 yardsusing open sightswith my old 22. I got him his own 22 this year so I could use mine when I want to.
DMurphy317,
It is so neat to hear your 13 year old son getting better and better at his shooting and gaining in strength and accuracy. My son is now 23, and he buys sniperrifles! He was the one who got me into MLing by suggesting we buy Knight Discs8 years ago.Great to hear is he maturing into a fine shooter and hunter under your leadership.

Shot the loose powder for the first time this morning. The group at the top is actually a 5 shot group...2 inside the other. Tweaked the scope and the group to the right is actually another 5 shots. I am please for the first time out with the loose stuff. This was 90g of 777 2F pushing a 300g hornady xtp at 100 yards.

Next time out I am going to give the 250g a try. Will they be off the paper high?

That is pretty good shooting for an >>old<< rookie, your going to have to change your name after you get some experience with loose powder! Good luck dial-in the 250. They will be high, just aim at the bottom of the target not dead on bull's eye. Chap

To fowl with loose powder is easy. Dump 30 grains of loose down the bore and put a wad on top of the loose powder (or even push a patch or two into the barrel and push them down on theload) and fire it. That will fowl the barrel for you.

That is some good shooting at 100 yards. Like said, aim at one of the lower corner black squares and see how much higher it is shooting. Were you swabbing between shots? Nice shooting again.

Cayugad, I used windex after each shot and a dry patch. I wasn't sure what to expect as far as crud. Never got the crud ring. By the way, I ran out of 777 primers and had some kleenbores to use up. There was no difference in my groups between those two primers. I will still buy more 777 primers...I like them. The kleenbores have a tendency to get a little snug once you get fouling around the breech.

I shoot Winchester W209 primers. They are $4.99 a pack. The Kleenbore and the 777 are $6.99 a pack and I am not someone that experiences problems with crud rings. Although when Wal Mart had a sell off at the end of season I bought them out of their Kleenbore for $3.99 a pack. I think there were only six left, but I still have one pack left.

Thanks for the kind words. Now that I know the rifle will shoot where its aimed, I need to get off the bench and start practicing. Most of my hunting will be from a climber or ladder stand. In all cases I will have a shooting rail. I assume the best practice would be in a sitting position?

I hunt from a tree platform as well. I practice off a set of shooting sticks and find that it is almost identical to my shooting out of the tree stand. I have shot off both a rail and I even took my shooting sticks up into the platform. You should have little trouble knocking one down with that rifle.
