Does anybody have any tips on re-blueing?

I am reblueing a barrell from a gun I borrowed from my father in law. I must have put it into its case while it was damp or something - I dont remember doing it. When I opened it up after about two months, I discovered there was rust all over the barrell.
I tried a few methods of getting the rust off, without total success, I used rust/blue remover to start over with a silver barrell.
Is there any tricks or tips to make the end result better?
I would appreciaite the help, Ive never done this before.
Thanks

If the rifle is in bad shape, I would suggest sending the barrel off to have it professionally done. I tried to make a bad rifle good. While it looks alright, it is not a new looking barrel. The trouble with the pitting is you get all that cleaned out, and even though it take to a bluing, it is still mishaped.

gotta agree. ive tried cold blueing at home and it doesnt look or wear as good as sending it off to get hot blued. if your gonna send it off for re- finishing i also like the dura coat process (camo finish). i also just sent out a rifle for black ice teflon coating. im getting lazy in my old age and other than oiling the inside of the barrel those coatings protect way better than blueing. a good hot blue is like 100$ as compared to 150$ for duracoat or 140$ for the black ice. parkerizing might be a good option also. make sure the bore isint rusted out and the action functions properly. ive seen a couple wet guns that had been left in the plastic cases with the egg foam. i use the silicon gun sacks jst in case after a hunt. even a day or 2 will ruin the metal on a gun. i wish they made better gun case linings.
