Default Best Powder Experiences with a .50 T/C Hawkin

Just wanted to ask everyone and see what their best powder was for a .50 T/C Hawkin with a roundball and a MaxiBall (loaded seperatly of course)
Also, how many grains were you using?
Sighting in soon, cant wait, wanna have an idea where to start.
Anyone ever use Schetzuen Powder?

Wel ,I use 90 gr FFF in the 1 in 38-110grFF in the 1 in 48 and 120 in the 1in 66 and 130 in the 1 in 80 Thats what they group best with all RB.
I used black to start with went to prydex when it came out and now am working on a choice between APP Gold and Pinnacle shoots same loads with APP will be testing the others before next hunting season. Lee

I load in my 50 cal. flinter barrel (mid 70's)100 grains of goex 3f a wad and 015 patch and ball.Conical bullet I find 360 to 385 grains shoot excellent with 85 grains of goex 3f
I load in my 54 cal. barrel flinter (again early year 70's barrel) 95 grains of goex 3f a wad and 015 patch and ball.

100 grains of Goex 3f and a moosemilk patched roundball in my .50 Hawkins Flinter. In my .50 percussion I shoot 90 grains of Goex 3f and a patched roundball. As for the maxi ball I shoot them with 80 grains of Goex 3f and a wonderwad between the powder and the maxi.

i use 2 f not 3f .your barrel will last longer with 2f.ha, i read that somewhere. here we go, i use 2f geoxin my hawkins .50cal 1-48 twist flintlock.i use 80grs. of 2f and MAXI-BALL.370, not the maxi-hunter, i hate them.this load DOES not kick, accurate, easy to load, only 6 dollars for 20 bullets unlubed.i use 54 caliber wonderwad not the .50cal one. i think it seals better on bigger wad.i use BORE BUTTER IN barrel on the MAXI-BALL. lighter loads are better in my shooting as RECOIL can make you flinch and if you flinch, its all over with a flintlock.i would start out with the MAXI-BALL and after you get more shooting, then start playing with roundball at low charges to start. take care.

they dont shoot

85gr. of Goex 2F with .460gr No Excuses in my 1-48 twist barrel. Very accurate, and a lot of power.

90gr. of Goex 3f with .490 ballandpillow ticking patch with bore butter lube in my Green Mountain 1-70 twist barrel when hunting. At the range, I use T/C #13 for patch lube because I get tighter groups with it. The 1-70 twist is great because it is almost as accurate with heavy loads as it is with light charges. Just make sure you have a good patch.

I use 3f with round ball, because of less fouling. Just remember that 90gr. of 3f is probably the same as about 105-110 gr. of 2f. That is how I settled on 90gr.

If you live where blackpowder is easily accessible, that is what I would go with in your sidelock. It is cheaper, and the ignition much faster. At least faster than Pyrodex. I have not had a need to experiment with some of the newer blackpowder substitutes. I probably will someday though.

When I had a Hawken (just gave it to my son for Christmas), 90 gr of loose Pyrodex shot rounballs real well. No experience with maxiballs.

oh my shoulder when i see 100 or 110 grs of 2f, ouch. i HATE recoil.can i ask why would you need so much powder if your shooting is only 100 yds with flintlock on whitetail deer. 80 grs of 2fis enough to take any whitetail deer ,been doing it for 40 years now and most of my ,MOST accurate groups with conicals were always around 80 gr area anyhow. secret to using a flintlock is being able to hold after shot without flinching and squeeze the trigger.with recoil and not a lot of practice, you are going to flinch.most ,including me ,shoot much better without the recoil.i tried heavy loads years ago, my groups opened up and kick was terrible.i hated it and still do to this day. i see others at range almost closing their eyes waiting for kick and noise out barrel. they flinch all over.you know what, i have been seeing it for 40 years too, they just keep loading guns to max,it nevers ends but its not nice to see target after they shoot.bullets all over place.take care.
