Still Stuck - Speer Gold Dot
#1
I am still trying to make some decisions about these Gold Dots, especially the 300 grain HP Casual. With a BC of .233 for a less expensive factory bullet they show very good ballistics. This is the last weekend of ML season for us, what ever (almost) whitetail crosses the muzzle will be my big game test. I shot them at a bunch of targets with the Hawken and I hold really decent groups for an old man. I just do not what they are going to do on big game.
Here is the ballistic chart I ran on them - really to me they look kinda impressive.... Take a look and see what you think...

My interest in this bullet was stimulated by a recovered slug that a customer brought in my shop. Came out of an elk he had killed with a .454 Casull. It was mushroomed to alarge frontal diameter and he indicated that the elk had hit the ground in very short order after the shot. I think he was pushing these bullets to around 1900 fps - about the same as what a magnum muzzleloader would do with a bullet of this weight.
Since deer aren't as dense as elk; I would suspect that, if anything, this bullet might exit a deer - but would probably make a large wound channel in the process. Someone needs to test this bullet out on big game with a muzzleloader . . . . let us know how it works.

If one was to judge the performance by ballistics I would say you have a winning load there sabotloader. I hope you get the opportunity for a field test.. shoot one my friend..
