Gauge/ Caliber Weight/gr.
Balls/lb.
8 .835 875
10 .776 700
12 .730 583
13 .710 538
14 .693 500
16 .663 438
20 .615 350
24 .579 292
28 .550 250

That will give you a ruff idea of the kind of caliber you would have to look for in order to get the size of shotgun you want. I personally shoot a .62 caliber smoothbore which is a 20 gauge. If you really want to throw some serious shot and also hunt with a large roundball look for a Brown Bess Kit in .72 caliber. It would be all the shotgun you would ever need, and for close range roundball shooting they are more then able to take out VERY large game...

Hope this helped..

Here's an excellent site you might want to bookmark.
http://members.aye.net/~bspen/SmoothboreLoads.html

I have TC Hawken muzzleloaders and Green Mountain barrel company makes several "drop-in" barrels for the TC Hawkens, some of which are smoothbore barrels...I set up a couple of TC Hawkens withthese Flint barrels: .54cal(.28ga) and .62cal(.20ga)

My 25yd small game load for the .54cal(.28ga) SB is:

70grns Goex 3F (or 80grns 2F)
Two OxYoke wonderwads (as overpowder wads)
1+1/8oz #6's
.28ga Circle Fly over shot wad

My 35-40yd Turkey load in the .62cal(.20ga) SB is:

70grns Goex 3F (or 80grns 2F)
Two OxYoke wonderwads (as overpowder wads)
Paper shot cup
1+5/8oz #6's
.20ga Circle Fly over shot card

Made by Green Mountain, my .54cal (.28ga) Flint smoothbore barrel is 15/16", specifically made as adrop-in barrel for the .45/.50cal TC Hawken stock...contact Ed Cain at Cain's Outdoor, West VA.,..he'll order it for you...$150...and it shoots Hornady .530 roundballs into a 3" aim point sticker at 50yds (90grns Goex 3F + OxYoke wonderwad+ .010" prelubed patch)...and excellent smoothbore barrel...
